Bechtler history comes alive for Christmas event
Jean Gordon
The Bechtler Christmas Open House was held on December 7, at 130 West 6th Street in Rutherfordton. Guests enjoyed authentic German refreshments, heard live German music, viewed period artifacts and exhibits, and walked amidst holiday lights and decorations that transported visitors to the 1830's. Exhibits included the original Coin Press that was designed and used by Bechtler, the only known Bechtler Rifle in existence, and Bechtler's 1840's square grand piano. A special exhibit during the open house was the largest Collection of Bechtler Coins - The Norman Jenkins Collection -- brought from Betty Jenkins. Christopher Bechtler minted America's first one-dollar gold coin, 17 years before the U.S. Mint. The Bechtler's minted more than $2.24 million dollars in gold coins, stimulating commerce in the Southeast and leaving a permanent legacy to both Rutherford County and American history. The heritage center also serves as the headquarters for the North Carolina Gold Trail which connects more than 30 counties with historical significance from the NC Gold Rush. The Bechtler Heritage Center and the Bechtler Mint Historic Park provide educational material, programs and tours throughout the year and welcome your donations. Please contact the Center via phone or email and see how you can help further the growth of this amazing historical asset. The Bechtler House Heritage Center is currently open for tours on Fridays from 10am-3pm and Saturdays from 10am-1pm and by appointment Monday through Thursday.
