The "Rainbow Bridge" was a memorial in the gardens of the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge. This feature was where pet owners left collars and tags to honor lost pets. Inspired by the widely known Rainbow Bridge poem, the Rainbow Bridge was created by artist Amy Wald around 2022. It became a popular, moving spot for visitors to share in grief and celebrate their beloved animals. Sadly, the original Rainbow Bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Helene in 2024.
The Flowering Bridge had to be demolished in August 2025, due to flood damage. But volunteers have rebuilt the gardens on either side of the river and visitors are returning to enjoy the gardens. As part of the new garden construction, a new Rainbow Bridge is being built in the west end gardens.
The new Rainbow Bridge will measure 12 feet long and will look very similar to the old one. It will be constructed from redwood and will have five arched railings. Materials for the new bridge are scheduled to be delivered in October. Local Artist Amy Wald will paint the bridge and construct the details.
Approximately 470 collars from the original Rainbow Bridge were recovered from the lake by contractors of the Army Corps of Engineers. Two arches on each side will hold these recovered collars as a tribute to the original Rainbow Bridge and the pets that were honored.
The bridge will cross over a custom-made water feature that looks like a rocky river. Construction of this water feature has been completed, and visitors are welcome to come see it. The water feature was built by Jay's Landscaping of Columbus.
The garden surrounding the Rainbow Bridge is being designed by rose expert, Paul Zimmerman. His design includes plenty of roses, pink dogwood trees and seasonal flowers. Drift roses on the bank have been planted in colors to resemble a rainbow. A patio at the end of the Rainbow Bridge will feature benches and a quiet place to sit with your pets. From the Rainbow Bridge garden, there is a spectacular view of the Chimney Rock on the mountain above.
Visitors are welcome to come see the progress. The gardens are open 24/7 and there is no charge for visiting.
