East Rutherford wins County Title

Behind the running of Demetrius Mauney, East Rutherford pulled away late for a 23-0 victory over Chase on Friday night.

Mauney warpathed his way to 230 yards and two touchdowns, while the defense pitched a second consecutive shutout. The Cavalier defense allowed Chase (4-7) just over 100 total yards in the win.

It's a shame that East Rutherford (4-7) never really found themselves again until the end of the season. The Cavaliers had won their first two games and then won their last two as they lost seven in a row between those four overall wins. East looks dangerous to play now, but it may not matter among postseason implications.

Just an unbelievable sequence of events as R-S Central (5-6) lost in overtime for the second consecutive week, 28-21 to Burns (9-2). A tipped pass between two R-S Central defenders with just seconds to go and Burns came away with a 60-yard touchdown on the play to the tie game at 21-all last Friday. The Hilltoppers couldn't score in overtime and lost. I can't believe what I saw and still it goes down as one of the most memorable games I have ever covered. The Hilltoppers did everything right, but close it out.

Thomas Jefferson (8-3) continues to roll as they easily took care of Highland Tech 57-20 last week. The Gryphons have won four straight and given up just 42 points in those wins.

Playoff update: At the moment, it looks like when then bracket does come out on Saturday November 12th that Thomas Jefferson will host as a three-seed in the 1A West/Midwest and get either Bishop McGuniness or Union Academy.

In the 2AA West/Midwest bracket, R-S Central will likely get the #7 seed and go to #2 seed Wilkes Central in Moravian Falls.

Both East and Chase will likely NOT make the playoffs. Teams only need four wins to be eligible, but their are a number of teams who have five wins, thus forcing both to end the season prematurely.

Men's soccer update:

Chase soccer easily won in the first round of the 2A playoffs Saturday as they took care of Eastern Randolph 5-0. They had Forest Hills on Tuesday, but could host Shelby or Trinity in the third round on Thursday (11/10) should they beat Forest Hills. Win Thursday and I like the chances of them hosting Salisbury on Saturday in the Western Semifinals.

Thomas Jefferson sunk West Montgomery 11-2 in the first round of the playoffs and hosted Woods Charter on Tuesday. With a win they could go to Starmount or host Mountain Island. The Gryphons could have to go to Community School of Davidson on Saturday the November 12th.

R-S Central soccer ended the season with a 4-0 loss at Trinity in the first round of the playoffs.

NFL Rankings for this week.

1)New England: They seem to be the team to beat. 2)Oakland: Coming on strong, great run game, terrific QB play and they just beat Denver. 3)Dallas: They have all the pieces to win at least the NFC, as long as Ezekeil Elliott doesn't get suspended. 4)Denver: The defending Super Bowl Champs are still dangerous. 5)Kansas City: Four of their six wins were against quality teams and the defense is getting it done.
