Facebook Unveils Sculpture, Wraps Up Busy Year
As it wraps up a busy 2011, Facebook today unveiled a new sculpture by Rutherford County artist Tom Elfers.  The piece -- created in the image of the company’s signature ‘f’ -- includes material reclaimed from Facebook’s data center site in Forest City.
The site has been bustling, currently hosting around 450 construction personnel — making for a total of around 2,700 for the year.  Data center manager George Henry announced in October that construction would begin immediately on a second building that will mirror Building 1.
The ‘f’ sculpture now proudly greets visitors to the first building. Says Elfers of his work: “I wanted to utilize as much reclaimed material as possible for this sculpture and incorporate new materials only to strengthen the old materials. I feel the finished sculpture shows not only how the old can become new again, but also how the old can work together with the new and become something even better than any of the individual pieces alone.”
