Hazel Juanita Toney, age 86 of Shelby died Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

Juanita was born January 30, 1940, in Rutherford County and was the daughter of the late Joseph Woodrow Thrift and Reba Kay Powell Thrift.

Juanita was a homemaker and a member of Gantts Grove Baptist Church where she was active cooking and serving meals. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Diane Green, her great-grandson, Bradley Liam Greene, and her brothers, Alan Thrift, Dean Thrift, and Eugene Thrift.

Survivors include her husband of 70 years, William Floyd Toney, her son, Dennis Toney and wife Betty of Forest City, her daughters, Brenda Kay Toney Ligon of Shelby, Elizabeth Smith and husband Michael of Forest City, and Marie Roach and husband David of Forest City, a granddaughter that she and Floyd raised, Tanya Lynn O'Brien, her brother, Joe Lee Thrift of Forest City, 15 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held June 15 at Gantts Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Lane officiating.
