Help Save a Piece of Rutherfordton's History
Jean Gordon
The Town of Rutherfordton is working to find a new home for one of Rutherfordton's historic treasures, the Greenway House (c.1883). The two-story porch with Eastlake-style mantels has stood for generations and even ties to Hollywood through Lee Greenway, a Rutherfordton man who became a makeup artist for films and television in the 1930s, including being makeup artist for Andy Griffith. The town is partnering with Preservation NC to offer the structure for relocation and preservation. The town's first priority is to see the Greenway House restored and given new life with a caring owner from Rutherford County. The house is located at 151 S. Washington Street in Rutherfordton. Cost is $15,000 for the structure only. The house must be moved to a new site within Rutherford County. If interested in saving the historic home, contact Jack Thomson, Preservation NC at 704-473-0005 or jthomson@presnc.org.
