Learning to kayak, canoe and more

A class is being offered in Rutherford County for anyone wishing to learn how to operate a canoe, kayak, and more.

The class is designed for beginners interested in paddling.

Instruction will begin on flat water utilizing the pool facilities at Isothermal Community College and also an off campus pond.

If there is interest and ability, there is an option to paddle a section of the Broad River at the conclusion of the course.

Participants will learn beginner paddling skills and safety procedures, including how to turn and stop the boat effectively.

Other learning objectives include:

1) An understanding of different equipment needs, such as types of kayaks and canoes, paddles, clothing, safety gear, and Personal Floatation Devices.

2) Entrance and exit techniques when on the water.

3) Transportation techniques, including how to transport the equipment to location and organize carpools for put-in / take-out locations.

4) Connect to the local paddling community.

Participants will need to bring their own boat, paddles, and lifejacket. If needed there will be lifejackets. Call Jess at 828-351-3235 or email jess@rutherfordoutdoor.org for any questions.
