Rutherford County Library Director Martha Schatz was honored with a retirement party Dec. 19.

Schatz, a native of Mississippi, has served as director for 31 years. She was presented a plaque for her years of service by Rutherford County Manager Carl Classen, County Commissioner’s Board Chair Bryan King and County Commissioner Mike Benfield.

In presenting the plaque to Schatz, Classen expressed how much she would be missed. King expressed gratitude for Schatz’s service, saying “Thank you so much for what you’ve done, your service and what you’ve built for this county.”

Schatz was also presented the North Carolina Cardinal Award, an award given by the governor for public servants who have spent 30 or more years in state or local government. It was given to Schatz by Rutherford County Library Board of Trustees members Robin Lattimore and Alice Bradley.

Also recognized was April Young, who replaces Schatz as library director.
