Peggy Jean Tipton Carpenter, 82, of Rutherfordton, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2019.

A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Phin and Elizabeth Hamrick Tipton and wife of the late Clifford "Tip" Carpenter. She was the sister of the late Gaynell Roper, Vearl Daniel, Alvin Tipton and Earl Tipton.

A member of First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton, Jean was a beloved children's Sunday School teacher for decades. She was also passionate about the local prison ministry, and served in leadership positions with the 096 Prison Chapel Ministry from its beginning

Jean owned and operated a bookkeeping and tax service in Rutherfordton for more than 40 years.

Survivors include two sons, Mark (Donna) Carpenter and Scott Carpenter, one daughter Amy Carpenter; four grandchildren.

The funeral was held at First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton. Interment followed at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery.
