When Wendy Shumaker decided to move to Rutherford County, as she looked at property one question came to mind: Where could she put her garden.

Being a farmer wasn't something Shumaker set out to do, nor was publishing her own cookbook. But the former construction industry worker has found that both provide a therapeutic outlet.

An event that began in 2003 with a group of just eight women has now grown into one that serves hundreds.

The 13th Annual Sister Chicks for Christ of Rutherford County is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m. at The Foundation Performing Arts & Conference Center on the campus of Isothermal Community College.

This past week, Rutherford County went 1-2, pending East Rutherford's delayed outcome with Kings Mountain. So let's recap what was week four of high school football and talk about a couple of other things outside of that.

This week I go back out on the road to speak to guys and gals who love to hunt and fish. I'll be driving a 1300 mile circle that will include Mississippi and Georgia before I come back home to Tennessee.

The events of Sept. 11, 2001, will never be forgotten, and an upcoming build event by Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity will continue to honor and memorialize those who lost their lives as well as those who continue to serve in the military and as first responders.

More than 51 health and wellness projects that will be facilitated by non-profit organizations in Rutherford County have received grants totaling $1 million.

Those grants were given as the RHI Legacy Foundation's first grant cycle, and were presented during a dinner reception held recently at the Performing Arts and Conference Center at Isothermal Community College. Originally the grant cycle was going to provide $500,000 for health and wellness projects. However, adjustments in the funding were made after it was realized that many of the projects had longer timelines than 2015.

Rutherford County did something it doesn't do very often on the gridiron. They just swept up four wins in a weekend. They now are 10-2 on the year. This coming weekend will be the extremely difficult as most get Cleveland County teams as SMAC play begins.

We are quickly coming to everyone's favorite time of year. The signs of summer's close are the start of school, Labor Day, and another hunting season.
