Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
We all like to be identified with certain things. Some people will drive nothing but a Ford – except for the Chevy guys who think Ford stands for Fix ORepair Daily. Bow hunters are notorious for this as well. There are PSE people (like me) and there are others who will own nothing but a Mathews, Hoyt, Bear, or some other brand. In sports we have our favorite team. Where I live, one is either a Kentucky or Tennessee fan. When our team loses, we take it hard. It’s not any team; it’s our team. We lost. We’ll come back. We were robbed. Our identity comes with ownership

Huge Hoops Game Friday, East Rutherford Host Shelby
Huge Hoops Game Friday, East Rutherford Host Shelby

I bet the gym will be packed at East Rutherford on Friday, December 20. It’s East Rutherford (4-1, 2-0) versus Shelby (5-1, 3-0) to see who can obtain the early SMAC standings lead on the boys side of the equation.

Despite East Rutherford leading at the end of eight of those quarters, Shelby won all four meetings last year.

How’s your attitude?

A friend was learning to fly.  You are required to wear blinders when you are learning so that you are trained in how to look only at the instruments on your dash, not at the airspace around you.

He was given an order to increase his altitude to so many thousands of feet, which he began doing.  All of a sudden, the instructor yanked the blinders off of my friend and said, “You were so concerned about your altitude, but now look at your attitude!”

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
Change is a merciless taskmaster. It is both consistent and impulsive. It arrives both expectedly and unexpectedly. At times it is welcomed and at other times dreaded. It can knock the wind out of us or infuse a breath of fresh air. In the case of hunting and fishing, change shows up in either movement or a lack of it. Proficient outdoorsmen know when to adjust their practices to make the best of change.
I think often about how I have changed as an outdoorsman over the years. I can remember the time when opportunity was more important than convenience. In my younger years, the last thing on my mind was how difficult it might be to drag a deer from the place of its demise to my truck.

What’s your legacy?

I was at a funeral recently for a woman who had two grandsons.  Both of these guys gave her eulogy.  That’s pretty tough when you’re close with your grandmother like these two obviously were.

I was greatly intrigued by their eulogy.  These two grandsons didn’t talk about what lavish gifts they received from their grandmother or expensive trips she took them on.

What did they talk about?  They talked about the time they spent together doing everyday kinds of activities.  They remembered the special foods she cooked just for them.  They laughed about her pet phrases.  They recalled her pranks and practical jokes she pulled on her family and friends.

I was struck by the fact that the things so many of us consider important weren’t what these guys talked about.  The spiritual legacy these grandsons received was about everyday things.

What kind of legacy will your grandchildren recall?  They’ll probably talk about the little things you do, not your presents; little things that are really big.  So listen to life today and focus on how you can Live Positive and pass it on.
