Stuff The Bus
Stuff The Bus
This is the last opportunity for everyone to help “stuff the bus” with supplies and tools for schools. This annual school supply drive ensures that each student attending Rutherford County public schools has all the school supplies needed to succeed. It’s a neighbor to neighbor exchange for caring and giving people. Education is key to giving these kids an opportunity to succeed in life. The more our kids are successful, the more they can give back to the community.

How long do your storms last?

I was in our yard working on something—cutting grass or roses or spreading mulch—something like that when all of a sudden the wind started gusting.  Then the gusts grew more severe.  I looked up in the sky and noticed that it was black with clouds.  A storm was blowing up and quickly.

So I got my tools together and went inside just as huge drops of rain fell.  It was one of those heavy downpours that the gutters can’t contain.  “Well, there goes my afternoon,” I thought.

Deer give us a great example of how patterns change according to ones needs. Right now, in many parts of the country, we are seeing a changing pattern. I always break these down into three periods; early spring through late summer, late summer through fall, and winter. Let me explain. In the early spring through late summer, the land is full of all sorts of food. The deer do not have to travel far to get a variety of tasty foods. During these times, they are somewhat unpredictable because there is no particular place that is more special than another. Late summer through the fall is much different. During this time, soft mast such as apples, pears, and other fruits begin to fall off the trees. And since deer love these, you can trust the fact that they will show up with regularity. And this also goes for their favorite nuts - the acorns.

High School Sports Season Is Here; NASCAR Has New Leader

There is nothing like a first day!

On Monday, over 250 kids participated in the opening practice of high school football for all of the teams across the county. Nobody seemed more thrilled than coach Daniel Bailey at Chase.

“We have around 20 kids that return for their senior year and I feel like we had a great first day of practice,” Bailey said. “We have good size and I feel like our athletic ability in the open field will be better than a year ago.”

 Do you have wandering eyes?

You’re sitting in a restaurant in an end-of-the-aisle booth.  Your back is to the front of the establishment.  The person sitting across from you has a view of the dining room.  You have only the person in front of you to look at; there’s even a large petition behind her, separating you from the kitchen.

You’re enjoying your conversation with your friend, but occasionally her eyes dart off to the side and she looks with anticipation at some person moving to a table.  You see the anticipation as one of those “Do I know this person?” looks.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths

This week’s article is an excerpt from my new book; Devotions from a Hunting, Fishing, Sports Father to His Son. I offer it in light of the Colorado shootings.

Guard Your Heart and Your Gun Will be Fine

Son, a lot of folks don’t understand people who hunt and fish. To them we are unlearned and barbaric (sort of like a caveman). They think that we just go out and kill stuff and have no heart or feelings toward animals. Some will even go out of their way to make all hunting illegal. What’s funny is they think if I have a gun in my home, that I’m an irresponsible parent. Most of the time, you will not be able to convince these people any different. It won’t matter how fair you are or how kind you are to them, or even how educated you are, they will still spew out hateful and mostly ignorant points of view.
