Sue Toney

Sue Toney

Sue Toney passed away July 17, 2014.  She was born November 28, 1917, in Fort Mill, to William Roy Horton, Sr., & Hester Sue Harton Horton. When her father started working for Cone Mills, the family moved to Cliffside.

Sue’s parents and all her siblings preceded her in death.  She was older than her 3 siblings: William Roy Horton, Jr. (wife Margaret), Mary Frances Neal (husband Norris), & Frederick Bobo Horton (wife Jean).

Sue married Fay Jolley in 1938 & they lived in Cliffside. They had 2 sons: Jerry (wife Charlotte) of Rocky Mount, and Leonard (wife Pamela) of Irmo, S.C. Fay died in 1967. Leonard died in 2011.

Her 3 adult grandsons (children of her son Jerry & her former daughter-in-law Mary Luckadoo Jolley) were Sue’s favorite “young folks”: Jonathan Jolley of Hickory, David Jolley & Michael Jolley, both of Greenville.

After being a widow for 21 years, Sue married Corin Toney. She loved gaining a step-daughter Rachel & a step-son, J.V. Jones & their son Kelly.  Rachel died in 2011. J.V. & Kelly survive. Sue’s husband, Corin Toney, died in 2000.

Sue always counted Geniece Mauney of Cliffside, one of her family.  Geniece knew it was Sue’s own decision in 2006 to sell her home & move to Somerset Assisted Living in Rocky Mount, to be near Jerry & Charlotte. Geniece also knew how much she would miss her many friends she was leaving in Cliffside and especially at Race Path Baptist Church where she had been a member since she was 16.

Sue was always a positive, very “upbeat” person. She worked in the Cone Textile Mill many years.

Her service will be Saturday, July 26, at 11:00 am at Race Path Baptist Church, Ellenboro, with pastor Rev. Randall Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45am at the church just prior to the funeral. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be given to Race Path Baptist Church.

McKinney-Landreth & Carroll Funeral and Cremation Service is serving the family.
