All I Can Do Is Speak My Piece

As I believe…people are people. Regardless of anything. It’s a shame that I have to talk about this subject in 2014, but I must this week.

The hottest sports topic of the week is L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling and everybody knows what he said. This is a tough topic to even discuss or think about, especially in the sports world. I do believe that the Clippers owner is guilty and a racist. He says that the tapes were doctored by his ex-mistress, but I am not convinced.

Now, Sterling has all the right to have an opinion, right or wrong with what he said. However, to have your team who is mainly African-American represent your organization and then stab them in the back with the comments he made is what is so disturbing to me. He also stabbed former friend Magic Johnson in the back as well since that was the picture (Sterling’s mistress in an innocent picture with Magic Johnson) which really set off Sterling’s remarks in the first place. Coach Doc Rivers and the Clippers players are the most affected by the whole thing, but he also offended the whole country, well the world too.

The Clippers must play for the love of the game and for a coach who believes in them and for their fans at this point. Unfortunately, racism does exist. Luckily, it’s nowhere near as prevalent as it used to be in society. Times and people have changed for the most part on that subject. Sterling should be suspended and I don’t even think he deserves to own the Clippers anymore. The league can’t force Sterling to lose ownership, but the owners can take a stand, which is likely to happen.

In NASCAR, Richmond provided a great race on Saturday night. An intense four car battle at the end for the win with some tempered drivers is what makes the sport exciting. It doesn’t happen every week in NASCAR, but the fans and drivers got what they wanted this past week.

Joey Logano probably had the best short run car of anybody on Saturday night and drove by three of the best in the business with just a hand full of laps to go to get the win over a dominant Jeff Gordon.

Kenseth vs. Keselowski

Plain and simple, Matt Kenseth played defense and Brad Keselowski didn’t like it during the final laps. While Kenseth was blocking the other three drivers in contention at the finish, it was Keselowski who was blocked the most. I can’t fault Kenseth for blocking as the leader, but I could understand Keselowski’s frustration a little bit. Kenseth pinched him every time Keselowski got beside him in the final laps, but Kenseth isn’t going to relinquish the lead easily in that situation. Brad wouldn’t either.

Marcos Ambrose vs. Casey Mears

After the race, Ambrose and Mears had some heated words for each other as they disagreed about each others concept of racing. Ambrose did confront Mears, but after Ambrose said his piece, he turned away and then Mears grabbed him. The Australian Ambrose reacted by packing a punch to Mears left eye and the two had to be split up at that point. Mears could have said his piece and walked too, but that’s not what happened. I don’t see a suspension for either driver, but points, probation and fines are pretty much the standard here. The last two big fights…both with Jeff Gordon involved didn’t get a suspension.

Talladega is this weekend and close racing with possible big wreck(s) loom in Alabama. Sunday will be a game of 500-mile survival and trying to go mistake free. The chances of all 43 drivers doing just that at Talladega is never good.
