Racing & Baseball Highlight Memorial Weekend

Racing & Baseball Highlight Memorial Weekend

This past weekend was one of my favorites in the entire year as the Memorial Holiday Sunday races that are the Indy 500 and the Coke 600.

In the 97th running of the Indy 500, it was somewhat like Dale Earnhardt in trying to win the Daytona 500 back in 1998. It took Earnhardt 20 years of trying in Daytona, but on Sunday Tony Kanaan finally got his chance to capture the Indy 500.

Let Us Never Forget And Always Remember
Let Us Never Forget And Always Remember

It originated after the Civil War. Originally called Decoration Day, it became a national holiday called Memorial Day and the date was finally set for the last Monday in May. This year it fell on May 27th. It is a very special day when we remember and honor the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day typically marks the start of the summer season and ends with Labor Day. Sadly over the years, the day has somewhat lost its meaning. Because of the long weekend created by it being on a Monday, the time has been seized for shopping sprees and sales, trips to the beach, family gatherings, fireworks and national media events. There is nothing wrong with this as long as each of us take the time and pause briefly to visit graves of family members who have served in our armed forces.

Listen To Life

What do you do when you’re looking at a mountain of a job?

A friend and I were talking about his decision to drink a gallon of water every day to improve his health.

“At first that seemed like a lot,” he said.  “I’d fill up a gallon pitcher and look at it and think, ‘I can never drink all of that.’”

“So how do you do it?” I asked.

Outdoor Truths
Memorial Day has always symbolized more than its original purpose. It is supposed to allow us to reflect on the lives of those who died while serving in the armed forces in the United States. We would do well to both remember that and to take a moment to actually do it in some fashion. I personally do not believe this is meant to be a somber day whereby one cannot enjoy all that the long weekend has to offer; but that we remember the price that was paid that gives us the freedom to have all of this fun.
