It originated after the Civil War. Originally called Decoration Day, it became a national holiday called Memorial Day and the date was finally set for the last Monday in May. This year it fell on May 27th. It is a very special day when we remember and honor the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day typically marks the start of the summer season and ends with Labor Day. Sadly over the years, the day has somewhat lost its meaning. Because of the long weekend created by it being on a Monday, the time has been seized for shopping sprees and sales, trips to the beach, family gatherings, fireworks and national media events. There is nothing wrong with this as long as each of us take the time and pause briefly to visit graves of family members who have served in our armed forces. It is a time to honor them. To bring an American flag to place on their grave and pause to say a prayer. It is a befitting salute we all should incorporate into this special day. Take the time and don’t forget. As Congressman Doc Hastings has said: “137 years later, Memorial Day remains one of America’s most cherished patriotic observances. The spirit of this day has not changed - it remains a day to honor those who died defending our freedom and democracy.”

As we traveled throughout Rutherford County this past Monday - - - Bostic, Caroleen, Chimney Rock, Cliffside, Ellenboro, Forest City, Henrietta, Lake Lure, Ruth, Rutherfordton, Spindale - - - we passed cemeteries that displayed remembrance, honor and thanks. So many had our emblem of freedom and the banner under which they fought to protect, - our stars and stripes. Each flag on a grave seemed to wave in the wind as if to proclaim: “Here, over here, it’s a monument for a special person who gave their life for us! We honor them and salute them, but mostly thank God for them.”
