East Rutherford High baseball has won everything , including five state titles, but they have yet to win their own Easter tourney.

East Rutherford found themselves in the championship game for the fourth time in five years, but lost 11-0 to South Caldwell in Easter Tourney finals at McNair. South Caldwell is a very good baseball team, which moved a JV squad from two years ago up that could have beaten a number of high school teams then. That’s how talented the Spartans have been as of late.

Chase couldn’t get into the championship game as they lost to Alexander Central and beat R-S Central this week. It won’t be any easier with three games on tap this week for Chase.

R-S Central for the second year in a row, lost three straight at McNair. That’s shocking for a team who has battled like crazy in nearly every game this season.

The boys in Burgundy are making quite a stand this season on the diamond. Thomas Jefferson baseball has a 6-game win streak and move to 11-4 overall, 6-3 in Western Highlands play with a 10-2 win over Madison this past Friday. It’s good to see coach Chris White and the Gryphons doing so well this season since they were 2-21 just two seasons ago. White is capable of building a program, doing so successfully at R-S Central before coming over to Thomas Jefferson.

In girls soccer, Anna Demon should score her 100th career goal in the coming days and leads the Lady Gryphons to a 9-2, 6-2 record at the moment. Thomas Jefferson is ranked 13th in North Carolina 1A soccer at the moment.

This weekend also poses a chance for Rutherford County residents to donate to a worthy cause. The 4th Annual Devin Price Memorial Baseball Tourney is this weekend (April 21st, 22nd) at Crestview Park and hosted by the Rutherford Women‘s League. The young man passed away as a middle schooler from a heart defect in 2008.

Price had a passion for baseball like no other and was pretty talented for a youngster of his age. However, the way he carried himself and continued to help others during his time on earth made a huge impact on Rutherford County kids before his passing. The proceeds will go to serve the Ron Freeman family and the Devin Price Memorial Scholarship fun.

On the NASCAR scene, a Rutherford County property owner, Greg Biffle dominated at Texas in the Cup Series this past weekend. Biffle, who led the points standings coming into Texas, stole the show and proved that the leader of the points is no fluke.

It was also great to see NASCAR Racing back at Rockingham this past Sunday. Kasey Kahne, who lost by a mere foot in the final Cup Series race there in 2004, picked up the win in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event. A great crowd was on hand and former driver/current Rockingham Speedway owner, Andy Hillenburg is doing a great job at the facility. Hilllenburg knows there is still more work to do there if the impact he wants NASCAR to have in the future goes all reality--again.

In hindsight, NASCAR races markets, and Rockingham’s potential to obtain the amount of people and money they would like for the sport, not the greatest. That’s exactly why NASCAR say they left in the first place. For Rockingham it would be overwhelming relief and boost a struggling economy there. I am not seeing the Cup Series returning anytime soon, but Andy is on the right track.

Tragically, over at East Rutherford High, it’s stunning news to learn that the former Cavalier football player and grad, Buddy Robinson was killed last week. While there is still a lot of unknowns about the case, Robinson was a very bright young guy, who actually got a bachelor degree in just two years at Western Carolina where he also played football for them as well.

If anybody has any information regarding the case, please call Crime Stoppers at 828-286-8477.
