Community mourns death of beloved Fire Chief

Bills Creek Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jimmie Howell died on Monday, November 9 after suffering a massive heart attack on Sunday, November 8. Chief Howell's body was transported from Mission Hospital in Asheville to the Bill's Creek Fire Station before transport to Crowe's Mortuary following his death.

Fellow firefighters, friends and family lined several roads and highways for the transport.

Chief Howell -- 1400 -- answered his last call at 3:40am, November 9 .

"Jimmie was more than just our Chief. He was a father, friend and mentor to many of us" said Pastor Anton Roos.

He served as the Bill's Creek Fire Department Fire Chief in Lake Lure for more than 35 years. He served in the United States Navy.

"His legacy will continue through his family and through those who faithfully served alongside of him at Bill's Creek Volunteer Fire Department. "

A graveside service was held Monday, November 16 at 2 p.m. at the Bill's Creek Baptist Church.

At the family's request, donations may be made to the Bill's Creek Fire Department, 1184 Bill's Creek Road, Lake Lure, NC 28746 or Bill's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1475 Bill's Creek Road, Lake Lure, NC 28746.
