Rutherford Regional Health System announces the retirement of Dr. Frank Mooring after providing over 30 years of service to the hospital, his patients, and to the community.

Dr. Mooring grew up in Rutherford County having moved to Rutherfordton in 1961 when his father, Dr. Stewart Mooring, became the first Radiologist at what was then, Rutherford Hospital. From an early age he knew he wanted to be a physician, although he initially aspired to become a veterinarian due to his love of animals. It was during high school, while working summers in the radiology department, that he realized his calling was to be a medical doctor.

Dr. Mooring attended the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill for his undergraduate degree, Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University for his medical degree, followed by internship and residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. He contemplated several specialties including pediatrics, pediatric surgery, and neurosurgery; but during his medical school rotations the desire to follow in his father's footsteps and return home to practice with him eventually convinced him to practice radiology.

After 15 years of school Dr. Mooring returned home in 1988 to join Rutherford Radiological Associates. During his 34 years of practice, he was instrumental in bringing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Cardiology, Prostate Ultrasound, Transesophageal Echocardiography, CT Coronary Arteriography, Film Screen, Digital and 3-D Mammography, Arterial Angioplasty and Percutaneous Gallbladder Drainage procedures to Rutherford Regional Health System. During his tenure at RRHS Dr. Mooring served as Chief of Staff and received the Dr. Stewart Mooring Award; named in honor of his father to commemorate physicians who exemplify through service and commitment the goals and mission of RRHS.

As a general radiologist, Dr. Mooring practiced in all facets of radiology, but his areas of special interest were Interventional Radiology and Breast Imaging. It was these subspecialties that allowed him to leave the lightbox/computer monitor to interact one on one with his patients, something he especially enjoyed.

When reflecting upon his retirement, it is Dr. Mooring's hope that he has continued the legacy his father by providing state of the art radiology services from a compassionate and caring provider.

RRHS thanks Dr. Frank Mooring for his exemplary years of care and being a constant embodiment of our mission in making communities healthier.
