It was all or nothing for East Rutherford on the final play of Saturday’s decisive game three against Randleman in the 2A baseball championship series.

Ridge Beheler doubled down the line in left field with Taylor Peyton standing on first base. However, Peyton tried to tie the game, but was thrown out at the plate with a spot on throw, losing 8-7.

The Cavs, who lost game one, 14-6 on Friday came back and in game two on Saturday morning and won 10-5, forcing the final game of the series.

Wesley Tarlton blasted two doubles for three RBI and Brock Helton had three hits in the game two victory.

Curtis Linthicum paced Randleman in the series, going 7-for-10 from the plate and picked up the win on the mound in game three.

This past week in Legion ball, Rutherford County Post 423 lost two games and were rained out in the other two contests. Post 423 was up 4-1 against Caldwell, but two errors doomed the club, losing 5-4. Polk County’s Roberto Taft, who earned the loss, threw a stellar complete game, but it was all for naught in the end. Against Hickory, Post 423 was down just 6-2 in the eight went it all came unraveled, eventually losing 11-2. Post 423 will host Cherryville at McNair on Friday.

“I am not faulting our effort so far this season,” Post 423 head coach Sammy Hooper said. “We have all our players now (five joining from East Rutherford this week) and hopefully we will start to gel and get things going.”

Just when things were calming down in the NASCAR garage area, it’s beginning to heat back up again. Reportedly, Richard Childress threw a couple of punches at Kyle Busch and put him in a headlock after Saturday’s truck series race at Kansas Speedway. Busch did nothing, but dodge punches and yell back at Childress.

Childress, who owns Joey Coulter’s truck in the event was upset at Busch’s treatment of the kid on the cool down lap following the race. On Monday, NASCAR announced that Childress was on probation until December 31 and fined $150,000 for the incident.

Already on probation for another 10 days, Busch wasn’t found any wrongdoing by NASCAR on Saturday.

Childress also owns Kevin Harvick’s car. Harvick and Busch had a post-races howdown in Darlington last month.

Another surprise winner took to victory lane on Sunday at Kansas. Brad Keselowski stretched the fuel milage, running the final 57 laps to end a 66-race winless streak.

It’s a shame for Dale Earnhardt Jr., who finished second and now has a 106-race winless streak. Junior couldn’t even come close to winning a race a year ago, now he has two runner-ups and ran out of gas while leading a race on the final lap. Big picture wise, he sits third behind a fiery Carl Edwards and very quiet Jimmie Johnson in the points standings.

The two-time defending Coastal Plain League Champion, Forest City Owls are back for another year of summer collegiate baseball. Following six games so far, the Owls are 3-3. After starting out 1-3, the Owls won Saturday and Sunday to pull their record even.

So far, it’s been the bat of Axel Johnson that has provided the offense over the past two games. Johnson tallied six hits and three RBI’s in back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday.
