Elbert "Ab" Gowan, age 93

Elbert "Ab" Gowan, age 93, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2023.

Elbert was born December 9, 1929 in Rutherford County to the late Wallace Gowan and Dullie Gilbert Gowan. He worked for General Fireproofing and Rutherford County Landfill for ten years, but his passion and lifelong work was farming. In his later years, he cut and finished rugs with Grover Greene. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Gowan; wife, Ostine Rome Gowan; great-granddaughter, Katelynn Gowan; brothers, James, Roland, Eugene and Paul Gowan; sisters, Virginia Green, Bonnie Foster, Gladys Teston, Wilma Russell and Katherine Vickers.

Those left to treasure his memory include his sons, Carlton Gowan (Sherry) of Shelby and Allen Gowan (Betty) of Rutherfordton; seven grandchildren, nine grandchildren; a number of stepchildren, which includes Janice and Robert Dayberry of Cleveland County.

The funeral was held November 29 at Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Rev. Terry Roach officiating.
