If you've always wanted to explore your family history but lacked the tools and know-how to do so, then the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Forest City can help you to get started.

On Oct. 24 from noon to 5 p.m. the church will be hosting a Family History Discovery Day in the Forest City Family History Center, located at 250 Mount Pleasant Church Road. Registration and check-in will begin at 11:45 a.m. and light refreshments will be provided at 2:40 p.m.

"All of our services are free," said EvaLou Wetherington, director of the Family History Center. "We can do searches for people and also help them with their research."

The Family History Center is open Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. It is also open by appointment at other times, Wetherington explained.

The idea to hold a day-long event came from Wetherington's own experiences going to events much like it. The Family History Discovery Day is being sponsored by the church with help from the Old Tryon Genealogical Society, she said.

"Genealogy is such an interesting hobby," she added.

The Family History Center has free access to ancestry.com, and during the discovery event participants will learn more about using it and other genealogy resources. Classes include how to use Roots Magic Software, resources available at The Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County and information on the DAR, how to locate female ancestors and searching for black genealogy, beginning genealogy and cemetery research. Each hour three classes will be offered.

The Family History Center also plans to begin offering weekly classes. To pre-register for the Family History Discovery Day, visit www.lds.org/familydiscoveryday or send your name, email address and phone number to ForestCityDiscoveryDay@gmail.com.
