The Foothills Daylily Society will host a daylily exhibition Saturday, June 15 at Gardenwoods Landscape Accessories, Woodcraft, and Gifts, located between Rutherfordton and Lake Lure at 4250 US 64 -74 A Hwy.  The show will be open to the public from 11:00am-3:00pm.  Daylilies in seven different categories on display. Winners in each category will be determined by outside judges. No admission.

In addition to the flower show, the club is sponsoring a daylily plant sale with proceeds going to help support the Western North Carolina Daylily Club, which will be hosting the 2014 National Convention of the American Hemerocallis Society in Asheville.

“The primary purpose of the flower show,” says Foothills president, Nancy Womack, “is to educate the public about the fascinating world of daylilies. Information on how to plant and grow daylilies, along with brochures and magazines, will be available to attendees.”

Womack adds, “When the average person is asked the question, ‘What do you know about daylilies?’ the typical answer is another question: ‘Aren’t they those orange flowers that grow by the side of the road?’  Well, yes, they are, but they are so much more. Daylilies come in a multitude of colors and forms, and usually, once a person starts collecting them, there’s no stopping.  It becomes a passion.”

John Martin, chair of the flower show steering committee, points out, “the Foothills Club is excited about this first daylily show and competition.  We have invited two neighboring clubs. This will be a great opportunity to see all the different forms of daylilies as well as colors.  The steering committee has planned a full day of activities, which includes the ‘People’s Choice Award’ for the favorite daylily on display, made by those visiting the exhibition.  Also, there will be a cash lunch provided by Cove Creek BBQ.”

Gabe Harden, President and Managing Partner of Gardenwoods, as well as a member of the daylily club, is hosting an open house during the flower show.  He is featuring a new, beautifully landscaped and furnished patio. He is also having a huge plant sale and other surprises for a fun-filled day.

The Foothills Daylily Society, which meets monthly from February through November of each year, began in 2006, largely through the efforts of Howard and Joyce Parris and John McWhorter. Several members have also participated in National Conventions, and many of us will be assisting the WNC Club next summer as they host the 2014 gathering of the AHS.
