Herman Lee Sims, age 89

Herman Lee Sims, age 89, of Rutherfordton, NC passed away peacefully Saturday, February 20, 2016.

Herman was a native of Rutherford County, the son of the late Jesse Lee and Iola Spurlin Sims. He was educated in Rutherford County Schools and had a special place in his heart for Ruth Elementary and RS Central High School where he served on numerous boards. He furthered his education at Wofford College after returning from serving his country in WW II. An entrepreneur at heart Herman had various jobs, including radio announcer at WAGY; managing, owning or clerking in various department stores throughout the county including; Belks, Moore's, Dalton's and Town and Country.

World War II saw Herman serving his country as a Marine on the beaches of Iwo Jima and with the occupation forces in Japan after the war. He was later recalled to duty serving with the US Army during the Korean War.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Hazel Bridges Sims of the home; son Andy (June) Sims of Spindale; daughters Donna (Keith) Baynard of Greenville, SC; Amy (Craig) Jenkins of Rutherfordton; sister Margie Sims Frady of Rutherfordton; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A service to celebrate the life of Herman Lee Sims was held at First Baptist Church in Rutherfordton with Rev. Tim Marsh officiating. Burial followed in the Piedmont Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors provided by the Rutherford County Veterans Honor Guard.
