Thomas Jefferson hosted Mitchell on Tuesday, will host Avery at McNair Field on Friday (15th) and then got to Highland Tech on the 19th.
Finally, I name my selections of an All-Rutherford County high school girls basketball team for this season. Last week, I named the boys, so let’s lace them up one more time for the ladies before we move completely over to the diamond.
Rachel Camp (East Rutherford) -Hands down, Rachel Camp was Rutherford County’s player of the year in ladies basketball. She could score (around 30 points a game), assist, block, rebound, and had moves that very few can ascertain at her age on the court. The good news for Cavalier fans, she still has one more year left in an East Rutherford jersey.
Alyssia Watkins (R-S Central) - Filled her role nicely in replacing all-time leading scorer in county history, Shannon Hines by taking over as point guard for her final season as a Lady Hilltopper. She averaged 12.3 points per game, led the team in assists (4.9 per game), steals per game (4.6) and overall deflections (128) this season. Nobody hustled more than she did on plays and came up less than 100 points shy of 1,000 for a career.
Tia Bristol (R-S Central) - Although just a junior, Bristol was key in the Lady Hilltoppers game plan this season. She averaged 13 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.2 steals. Reliable and yet maybe the most underrated player in the county this season. Just 293 points away from 1,000 in her career. She scored 360 this past season.
Te’ja Twitty (R-S Central) - If there was freshman of the year in the county, Te’ja Twitty won the honor without issue. Led the Lady Hilltoppers in scoring per game (14.1)and rebounding per game (11.5) this season.
Kaitlyn Smart (Chase) - Put up over 1,000 points and grabbed more than 1,000 boards in her career as a Lady Trojan. Shown her tenacity as she battled through injury during her sophomore year, still scoring 17 points a game that season alone. The inside-outside scoring threat will play basketball for Columbia College in Columbia, SC this fall.
Aliyah Davis (R-S Central) - Scored exactly 500 points for her career and was money from 15 feet away on a weak side baseline jumper. She didn’t mind blocking a shot or two either.
Shay Dewberry (East Rutherford) - For the exception of Alyssia Watkins, not many had the wheel that she possessed on the court. Behind Camp, Dewberry made a great second option when East needed a basket.
Kendra Holcombe (Chase) - As point guard all four years, Holcombe will be remembered for her scrappiness and toughness as she scored 843 points in her career. She scored over 13 points per game this season.
Justine Greene (East Rutherford) - Defensively, Greene could block shots and rebound with the best in the county. She finally obtained more comfort scoring late in the season and will return for one more year.
Anna Dedmon (Thomas Jefferson)- After missing her junior year to focus on soccer, Dedmon recaptured the point guard spot to lead the team in assists and scoring per game.
Honorable Mention: Taylor Miller (R-S Central), Victoria Bennett (Thomas Jefferson) and Christian Godlock (R-S Central).
