July 4 celebrations kick off in Rutherfordton on Friday; other festivities through Tuesday

Celebrations for America's 247th birthday begin in Rutherford County June 30 at Kiwanis Park in Rutherfordton and will continue through July 3 at Owls Stadium in Forest City with a fireworks display following the baseball game.

Surrounding communities have July 4th celebrations including Columbus, Casar, Marion and Fallston.

From Washington, DC the annual Capitol Fourth Concert will be televised on PBS beginning at 8pm from the west lawn of the United States Capitol Building featuring military bands, classical music orchestras, celebrity pop and rock artists. The event concludes with spectacular fireworks over the capitol's famous monuments.

July 4 weekend festivities

Friday, June 30

The Independence Day weekend kicks off in Rutherfordton June 30 at Kiwanis Park.

The event begins at 8pm with a concert by Ol'74 Jazz Band featuring patriotic music until 9pm with fireworks following.

"We have a great lineup of big band era charts for that evening and we're looking forward to celebrating Friday night in the park," said Seth Carson, from Ol'74 Jazz.

Kiwanis Park will be caped in red, white and blue as the public arrives to celebrate Independence Day.

The fireworks will be displayed from the parking area across from Kiwanis Park near Green Street and can be seen from downtown Rutherfordton.

"You'll be able to see the fireworks from the courthouse lawn and other areas downtown," said Magnolia Long, community development director.

"We are so excited to have fireworks back this year," Long said.

Attendees are invited to bring their own picnic food, blankets and chairs. Parking will be near Kiwanis Park and along Main Street.

Saturday, July 1

The Town of Lake Lure is sponsoring its Lake Lure Community Independence Celebration beginning at 6:30pm on the Lake Lure beach July 1.

The celebration includes an All-You-Can-Eat Southern Cookout Banquet with a Cash Bar. Advance tickets are $19.95 for adults; $9.95 for kids over 6 years; kids under 6, free.

Everyone is encouraged to bring a blanket, chair and swim float.

There will be a disc jockey for dancing from 6:30-9pm on the beach; swimming (lifeguard on duty) and entertainment for kids from 6:30-8:30pm.

Fireworks begin at approximately 9:30pm.

The beach will close to the public at 4:30pm for cleanup and will reopen at 6:30pm for ticket holders. Admission is limited due to the occupancy maximums.

Monday, July 3

Fireworks will be displayed July 3, following the Owls/Boone Bigfoot Coastal Plain League baseball game at Owls Stadium in Forest City.

The game begins at 7:05pm.

The 12-minute firework show can be seen from Owls stadium.

Rumbling Bald Resort will celebrate Independence Day with events on July 1, July 2 and July 3 for members and lodging guests only. Fireworks can be seen from the lake area and begin at 9:30pm July 3.

In the area:

Fallston: July 1

The community of Fallston begins its July 1 festivities at 5pm at Fallston Elementary School. The event concludes at 10pm with fireworks.

The band Rizen will open the celebration and Dirty Grass Soul plays at 7pm.

There will be a cake walk from 6-7pm. Bring a lawn chair. Door prizes, Half & Half drawing, food vendors and face painting are also a part of the celebration July 1.

Shelby: July 3

Shelby City Park will be the setting for the Independence Day celebration July 3. A variety of food trucks will be on scene in the late afternoon and remain until the fireworks display at 9:30pm.

Patriotic music and games begin at 7pm including face painting, balloon artist, bubble lady from 7-9pm.

Other events include: Patriotic costume contest, 8:30pm, Carrousel and train rides, 1-7pm, Shelby aquatic center open 12-6pm, Corn Hole tournaments 5:30pm in the gym.

A Fireworks Extravaganza begins at 9:30pm.

The Park is located at 850 W. Sumter Street in Shelby.

Columbus: July 4

Columbus is celebrating its 60th Fourth of July Celebration July 4 beginning at 10am and continuing until the fireworks show at approximately 10pm.

The day's family-friendly activities include food and entertainment, ending with fireworks. Call 828-894-8236 for more information.

Casar: July 4

The community of Casar kicks off the July 4 celebration at 5pm at Casar Park, 137 Deviney Street in Casar. The Independence Day festivities are sponsored by Casar's Friends of the Park.

There will be plenty of food, games, a talent show and awards.

Fireworks begin at dark.

Marion: July 4

Marion's Independence Day Celebration kicks off with a parade at 6pm followed by a "Fox and Company" at 6:30pm. Fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:30pm.
