The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® (AKA) Omega Sigma Omega chapter has logged over 500 hours serving Cleveland and Rutherford County since its chartering in 2017.

Through various community service initiatives, the women in the sorority have provided non-perishable food items and bathroom tissue to the Grace of God Rescue Mission and community blessing boxes, distributed masks to churches and businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic, revamped the Hardin Road Park playground in Forest City, provided class t-shirts, school supplies, and gift cards, along with organizing the clothes closet at the Rutherford Opportunity Center. In a joint effort with the other local sororities and fraternities, Omega Sigma Omega annually donates Thanksgiving turkeys to local residents. The chapter also awards college scholarships to deserving students in Rutherford and Cleveland Counties.

"We are committed to serving Rutherford County and its communities, says, chapter president Tropzie McCluney, "We are looking to be more visible in Rutherford County and partner with the community groups". Founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908, AKA is an international service organization whose mission is to be of service to all mankind. Omega Sigma Omega was chartered as a chapter of AKA in 2017 by 15 women to serve in both Cleveland and Rutherford counties.

Omega Sigma Omega is hosting its first local fundraiser to support its community service initiatives and scholarships on February 11th at 8PM. The Tickled Pink Comedy Show will be held at One13 on 113 West Court Street in Rutherfordton. Tickets may be purchased on Eventbrite and from sorority members for $25 ($30 at the door) and all are invited to attend or give a donation to the cause.

"We're really looking for the community to support this important cause", said Tarah Simmons, Fundraising Chairperson.
