Maggie Carswell Toney, age 94, of the Sunshine Community

Maggie Carswell Toney, age 94, of the Sunshine Community went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

Maggie was born February 22, 1932 in Morganton, NC to the late Isaiah Carswell and Callie Mace Carswell. She attended Salem Elementary and Salem High School and worked in textiles for many years. After retirement, she became a caregiver to children. She and husband, Pastor James Earl Toney played a primary role of the founding of Ross Hill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 30 years, Rev. James Earl Toney; sisters, Ruth Wheeler, Ruby Grooms and Vernie Gaddy; brothers, Wilson, Conley and Robert Isaiah Carswell.

Those left to honor her legacy include her children, Connie Toney Fisher (Hugh) of Sunshine, Rita Dianne Toney of Sunshine and James Arnold Toney of Tampa, FL; sister, Faye McPeters of Morganton; grandchildren, Emily Fisher Edwards (Nathan) and Anna Fisher Bailey (Ryan); and three great grandchildren.

The funeral was held September 14 at Ross Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Nathan Edwards, Rev. Josh Russell and Rev. Sammy Lawson officiating.
