Ryan Arrowood went undefeated during his senior year on the mound as an Appalachian State Mountaineer, but 2012 become became much sweeter the former R-S Central grad.

On the second day of the Major League draft and in the 28th round, Arrowood was selected by the Colorado Rockies last week. Arrowood, who also played summer ball with the Owls in two seasons, both CPL titles, signed a professional contract on Sunday.

Staying with baseball, Post 423 had to cancel all three of its baseball games this past week after finding out that there was a five-day lay over rule that was imposed during the offseason, which was put in place because of end of grade testing. So far, Derek Deaton and Tyler Harth have carried them to a 2-1 start as they will be back in action at home on June 19th.

Speaking of baseball, Forest City’s Owls have jumped out to a 7-4 record this season. So far the Owls lead in overall batting average and are second in fielding. With a little time, expect the pitching to catch up, but I would say many around town are fairly pleased the club’s start this summer.

The College World Series starts Friday with just one ACC team left in the tourney. The Seminoles just blasted Stanford by scoring 17 and 18 against to advance to Omaha. It’s no surprise that South Carolina and Florida, Arizona and UCLA are all going back to Omaha in being number one seeds. On Monday, Kent St. and Arkansas completed the eight team field of the 2012 CWS.

Cinderella is still wearing the glass slipper as Stony Brook knocked off six-time national champion, LSU over the weekend. Last week I spoke of Stony Brook’s hitting, which leads the nation with overall hits this season, they apparently can pitch a little bit too. I would have never guessed that LSU could only score seven runs in three games with the Seawolves.

Honestly, I do like South Carolina and Stony Brook to meet in the finals. Florida State has never won the CWS, but definitely seems strong to contend. Florida and Arizona won’t be easy outs either.

In the racing world, Joey “sliced bread” Logano gets his second career win in the Nextel Cup last weekend at Pocono. How cool is it to race the one person for the win who gave Logano his first big compliment among the racing world. Of course, I am talking about Mark Martin, who set a media blitz upon Logano at the age of 15 by stating that Logano was in fact the real deal. However, Logano is in the crossfire of being let go at Joe Gibbs Racing at the end of this season. That all remains to be seen with 21 races left to change some minds.

The NBA finals this week has the Miami Heat pitted against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The was no doubt that Miami and Boston would meet in the Eastern Conference finals, but ‘The Wild West’ was a different animal.

I believe the West is a stronger division and that is why I am taking the Thunder in six. Miami has the most talented and experience team, but Oklahoma City is too young to care.
