Fundraising for the Mosaic House to support DSS foster care is going well, said Emily Wood, director of the nonprofit group Mosaic Hope she and husband Brandon Wood co-founded in Rutherfordton.
Mosaic Hope has a goal to raise $229,000 to purchase the house in Forest City to support DSS foster care children. "It is overwhelming how the Lord is working in our county," she said.
At the end of August, approximately $172,000 was raised for the house in just over one month since the fundraising efforts began. The latest donations included $25,000 from Clearwater Paper; $10,000 from Fountain Electric and $2,517 from the Poker Run organized by the Lordz of Thunder Motorcycles Club.
"I'm truly believing, this property will be paid for by the end of September," Wood said.
"The community has been so supportive. It is absolutely incredible," Wood continued.
"We want to say a huge thank you to Clearwater Paper in Shelby for donating $25,000 toward the Mosaic House. This is an incredible blessing and we cannot be more appreciative of their support," Wood said.
Wood has applied for other grants from organizations and is waiting for responses.
If emergency placement is not available when a child or teenager has to leave their home often in the middle of the night, quite often they have to spend the night on a cot in the DSS conference room, while social workers are overwhelmed with numerous tasks.
"That is one of the biggest challenges facing the foster care system", Wood said.
Wood said if the children have dirty clothes there is no way to do laundry at DSS, so social workers go to the laundry mat, if they need to bathe or shower they have to be taken to a local church for a shower.
Mosaic Hope believes there is a better way and being able to create the Mosaic House, will be a second home to serve as a connection center for the children, caregivers and social workers.
"More than anything, though, we want them to know there is hope, even in the midst of all the brokenness," Wood said recently.
Mosaic Care works with and supports the Rutherford County Department of Social Services (DSS) in foster care situations.
"We want to be a problem solving nonprofit to help them," she said.

Golf Tournament Sept. 30 to benefit Mosaic Hope
The inaugural Mosaic Hope golf tournament will be held at Meadowbrook Golf Course.
Entry fee per team is $240 (Mulligan Package $10 per players); hole sponsorships $100.
Registration and lunch is at 1pm with the tee off at 2pm.
Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place teams; longest drive, closest to the pin, longest putt.
A silent auction will be onsite.
Food, fun and fellowship is promised with great people.
