I recall my first trip to the turkey woods. I was blessed to be able to go with one of the local experts. I didn’t know what to expect, but that didn’t quell the excitement. As usual I got very little sleep the night before and was up early enough to make sure I wouldn’t be late for my appointment. We traveled about 50 minutes before arriving at the bottom of the mountain. My guide said “watch this” and he slammed the door of his truck. The response was immediate and memorable; a gobble from the top of the ridge and only about 300 yards away. That was the first time I had ever heard a turkey gobble in response to some noise or call.

I followed closely as we made our way up the mountain. We paused a couple of times just to catch our breath. But my heart was already beating hard from the anticipation that came from the located turkey. When we reached the top it was breaking day. My partner quickly went into action. He made a soft call. The bird responded. I thought “this is going to be easy.” Little did I know that the bird that was eager to gobble was also old and wise, and eager to live. He was one of those toms that would gobble at anything but come to nothing. He was the boss. He had dodged enough shotgun pellets from days past to make him gun shy and unwilling to break ranks from his normal routine. My partner had been trying to shoot him for a while. There’s no doubt that this tom may have been fooled by the sound of a manmade hen but he was not going to allow himself to move until he had confirmed the sound.

Many men today have lost an important part of their life because they allowed themselves to be caught up in what sounded like the real thing.         It may have been the sound of fame or fortune or love. It may have sounded like a sure thing, but it was instead, a trap. It was set by man’s predator and enemy, the devil. The Bible says, “The ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” This means that even though my gobbler may have heard what he thought was a hen, he was wise enough to stay where he was until he knew for sure. Wise men like wise toms will do the same.
