Many people in the county are amped up for the Owls game this Friday. Forest City will host international powerhouse, Japan in a exhibition contest.

While Forest City boast a reputation of winning the past two Pettit Cup’s, a challenge from Team Japan is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The task of playing such a club and the style of ball that Japan can display makes this whole situation a huge deal as well.

In regards to the Owls, former Burns high grad, Adam Izokovic has proved very worthy this season as a new member of the team.

On second thought, Izokovic has been throwing lights out! Check out these stats; nine appearances, five saves, while giving up six hits and three walks in 11 innings of work. Even more spectacular, an earned run average of 0.00 is unheard of in the Coastal Plain League.

Legion playoffs have finally arrived this summer. Post 423 will play Mint Hill Army of Mecklenburg County in the first round of the Area IV North Carolina Legion playoffs. The winner will take on the Caldwell/Monroe winner next week.

The best of five series started Tuesday with a home game at McNair Field on Wednesday and they would play game four at R-S Central if need be.

If Rutherford County (7-9) can reach the Area IV finals, they automatically qualify for the state tourney held in Morehead City. Rutherford County won 10 of its first 11 playoff games to get to the Area IV finals last year.

Unfortunately, Post 423 will be without the services of second baseman, Blake Myers for the rest of the season. Myers was an instrumental part in helping the East Rutherford Cavaliers win the 2010 2A state baseball title and then again to reach the 2A finals this season.

Myers, who injured his knee at the plate against Freedom earlier this year in high school ball, rehabbed it back to health in time for the playoffs. The same knee (ACL) problem flared back up again last week as Post 423 played at Cherryville.

It was a surprised to many that Blake was able to return after his dad, Danny Myers and East Rutherford teammate, Taylor King had to carry him out of the stadium at East High a couple of months back. A few colleges have looked at him as far as playing baseball, but hopefully the young man can return to the diamond soon and to Post 423 next season.

If I could give out awards, then I would, but I can’t. However, I certainly can give notice to unquestionably the top performer of the week, which goes to J.M. Spangler. Spangler (R-S Central) crossed up Burke County last Friday, throwing a no-hitter into the eighth frame. He ended up allowing just one-hit in a 8-0 Post 423 win.

Maybe Rutherford County winning three of five last week is a good indicator of how things might go in the playoffs. In those wins, they knocked off one of the best, Cherryville in Gaston County, 8-4.

On the NASCAR front, Kurt Busch is becoming a pretender no-more this season after the win at Sonoma. The Sprint Cup Series now heads to Daytona for the Coke Zero 400. Trevor Bayne, who became a household name after capturing the Daytona 500 in February, tries to make it two for two at Daytona on Saturday night.

A mysterious health issue sidelined Bayne a short time after the 500 victory, but he returned to driving earlier in June. With this being a restrictor plate race, anybody can win this weekend -- even Bayne.
