It’s been an up and down season this summer for Rutherford County’s Post 423 legion baseball club, but the regular season is over. On Wednesday, they started a five game playoff series with Mint Hill on the road. Post 423 is supposed to host game two on the fourth of July and game four if necessary on July 6th. Should they win the series, they will likey have to play Caldwell County, who is the no.1 seed from the west. Post 423 (6-8) has won four of its six regular season games on the road, so not all is lost by having to travel for possibly three games.

The Bobcats did a nice job in the NBA draft, even without the No.1 pick. Picking up Michael Kidd-Gilchrist from Kentucky wasn’t a bad selection at No.2 overall. Kidd-Gilchrist carries a solid field goal percentage, rebounding skill and free throw shooting with him from college. They took Jeffrey Taylor from Vandy in the second round. I happen to like that pick because you add a smart and fiery kid, who can light it up from outside.

Right now anything would help the Bobcats and those two should easily be able to assist the worst scoring team in the league for 2012.

On the NASCAR scene, shockingly, current points leader Matt Kenseth covered the headlines this past week, as he will not drive the No.17 Ford at Roush Racing next season. However, Kenseth hasn’t said exactly where he will go, but a deal has been reached between he and another team. Speculation has Kenseth going to Joe Gibbs Racing, but that remains to be seen. I wouldn’t be surprised if Michael Waltrip Racing or Penske Racing were involved in this at all. Maybe Stewart-Haas Racing and Chip Ganassi have an outside shot, but John Andretti’s new team has also caused a stir. I seriously doubt this has anything to do with Kenseth, although both drivers are friends.

While on the race track this past weekend at Kentucky Speedway, Brad Keselowski went into put up or shut up mode. He certainly shut up Juan Montoya as he notched his third win of the year after having to go to a back up car. Montoya, who wrecked Keselowski’s primary car in the opening practice session, repaid the favor pushing Montoya car around in second practice. That was definitely an eye opener as Keselowski said after the second practice he wasn’t going to let anybody push him or his team around. Keselowski then proved it on Saturday night by winning convincingly and should make “The Chase” with ease now. Honestly, who says Keselowski can’t win the Championship this season? The potential is there.

And for those who keep up with the happenings on the links, it looks like Tiger is back. Tiger Woods just won his third PGA tourney this season, but restoring his image is still in question. However, most of the gallery cheered on Woods following his amazing 22-foot putt for bridie on 15 and when he won outright. Like him or hate him, with his talent level on the golf course, you can’t help but watch the guy play.

Locally, the Forest City Owls (20-9) have clinched the first half of the West Division’s Coastal Plain League this season. The Owls now get an automatic berth into the Pettit Cup Playoffs and nobody is really shocked that they are in again. The Owls have made the previous four playoffs while winning two league championships. Forest City’s Alex Close leads the league’s best offensive team and hails a .386 batting average at the halfway point of the season. The Owls who hosted Team USA on Sunday night, lost in a valiant effort, 4-1.
