Outdoor Truths

Once again, the deer season is coming to a close. I always hesitate to write that it is completely finished this time of year because the Deep South is still in full rut. The rest of us, however, have traded our rifles for shotguns or fishing rods. This season has forced me to make a change for next year. In Kentucky, the bears have caused a major shift in the numbers and movement of deer where I hunt. I have watched this slowly occurring for the past several years hoping something would curtail this change. But it looks like I will be the one to change. I have had to do this before.

Listen To Life
Listen To Life

Do you play Scrabble?

Recently I got an email from a friend who enjoys Scrabble, giving me some examples of how you can rearrange the letters of certain words to form other words.  For instance, when you rearrange the letters of “dormitory,” you get “dirty room.”  And when you rearrange the letters of “the Morse code,” you get “here come dots.”  Pretty cool, eh?

And the word, “desperation” becomes “a rope ends it” when you change the lettering around.  Did you know “animosity” rearranges into “is no amity?” And “snooze alarms” becomes “Alas! No more Z’s.”  “A decimal point” rearranges into “I’m a dot in place.”  “Eleven plus two” changes into “twelve plus one.”  “Mother-in-law” scrambles into “woman Hitler.”  And “slot machines” scrambled around is “cash lost in me.”

Life gets rearranged a lot, doesn’t it?  Well, no matter how you spell it, “positive” can’t spell “negative” even when you’re rearranged, so listen to life today and make a positive life.

The Story Of Our Namesake And His Achievements
The Story Of Our Namesake And His Achievements
It is most unfortunate that we have no photos or pictures or Griffith Rutherford and only have conflicting reports on the circumstances which relate on when he came to America. Little is known about the man who would become a hero to all of us. Some reports say he was born in Northern Ireland in 1721, others claim it was 1731. His grave marker at his final resting place uses 1721. It is said he was born in Ireland to John and Elizabeth Griffith Rutherford.

East Rutherford Continues to Roll; Super Bowl is Set

Prep hoops roundup

East Rutherford’s boys (12-3, 8-1) and girls swept the two games they played this week. The Cavalier boys on a roll as they have picked seven straight wins and hold second in the SMAC behind Shelby. They possibly host Veritas on Thursday (Jan. 23) and go to Burns (Jan. 28) followed by huge game at Shelby on the Friday (Jan. 31).

This Is Going To Be A Long-Winded Sports Column, Despite A Panthers Loss
This Is Going To Be A Long-Winded Sports Column, Despite A Panthers Loss
I am not such a bad prognosticated after all. I picked three of the four NFL games right and both Central-East basketball outcomes over this past weekend. And yes, the only one I got wrong was Carolina, but we will talk about that later.
Prep basketball roundup
R-S Central showed well at home, but East Rutherford’s boys had just enough to get by in a 63-53 game on the basketball court this past week. Too much Devonte Boykins and company, plus a solid defensive effort keep the Cavaliers on a five game winning streak.

Taking Action to Rebuild High Ropes Course at South Mountain Christian Camp
Taking Action to Rebuild High Ropes Course at South Mountain Christian Camp
Last summer a powerful lightning strike destroyed our entire high ropes course in one brief second. The bolt struck a massive oak tree in the middle of the course and traveled through steel cables to the other trees and climbing tower, blowing out massive chunks of wood at each connection point along the way.

I have been privileged over the years to spend time at some hunting and fishing trade shows. These shows are where retailers come to meet those who have products for sale. The exhibitors set up booths and displays in order to expose and tell about this year’s new model or the latest new gadget. It really is fun and you get to meet a lot of nice people

East-Central Meet On Court, Playoff Panthers Get 49ers
East-Central Meet On Court, Playoff Panthers Get 49ers

On the basketball court, it is rivalry week with East Rutherford facing R-S Central on Friday (1/10).

East has relied on Travis Waldroup-Rodriguez and Devonte Boykins all season long. Kaleb McEntire on defense, Shakari Jackson, and Trey Dawkins have stepped up, but will it be enough against a R-S Central who has a little more depth.
