No Excuses, I Am All Over The Place This Week
No Excuses, I Am All Over The Place This Week

I like to keep things short, simple and sweet, but I admit that I am all over the place this week when it comes to sports talk as a write on a July evening. Well, if you dare to go further, here are a few things on my mind.

Less than a month from now, high school football will officially begin with their first practice. R-S Central will try to keep the county championship, Chase and East Rutherford will look to find the playoffs again and Thomas Jefferson hopes to find a playoff win.

Outdoor Truths
Just drive down the road and you can learn a lot about someone. For instance, if I see a truck with a NRA bumper sticker and a Browning logo surrounded by camo accents, I’m sure they will pretty much help me if I have a need of any kind. On the other hand, let someone drive by in a convertible Volvo with a bumper sticker that says “real men play polo,” and I know pretty much that I’m on my own. You say I’m profiling. I say you have an amazing grasp of the obvious. Yes I am and so do you. I actually see this in real-time almost every week. I own a 2012 Toyota Tundra and a 1996 Honda Passport.

How’s your vacation?

Why is it that to take a week of vacation, you have to do two weeks of work before you leave and two weeks of work when you return?  You’re only gone a week!  Does the work multiply while you’re gone?

This reality can produce a certain amount of guilt about vacation times.  For instance, let’s say you go to the beach, pick up a seashell, and put it up to your ear.  Do you hear the soothing tides of the ocean gently rolling in on the shore?  Or do you hear, "So you thought you'd get away from work for a week, did you?  Don't you feel guilty?  Just think of all the work you’re missing.  That associate could be moving up to take your place, you know…"

When making a living interrupts your making a life, when work intrudes on recreation, remember that the word “recreation” comes from two words meaning, “to create again.”  Your vacation is a time to re-create your spirit, your family relationships, and your passion for life.

So listen to your life today and focus all of who you are on making a positive life, not just a living.  Enjoy your vacation!

Fun Starts At The Top Of The Hill In Rutherfordton July 4th!
Fun Starts At The Top Of The Hill In Rutherfordton July 4th!

The biggest and most fun filled event for the patriotic July 4th celebration in all of Rutherford County will be held in Rutherfordton on Friday. The fun begins at 10 A.M.

As we all know, Independence Day commonly known as the fourth of July, is a federal holiday in our country commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. It was then that we declared our independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. This special day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions and political speeches and ceremonies. It’s all about who we are, where we came from, and how. It’s America’s birthday!

Owls Doing Well, Post 423 is Done For Season
Owls Doing Well, Post 423 is Done For Season

Well, there is good news and bad news concerning baseball in Rutherford County.

The Forest City Owls have won six of their eight games and sit third overall in the Western Division of the Coastal Plain League. While (17-11), the Owls must turn to the second half of the season as they finished a game and a half out of first in the West standings. Thus, they must keep winning to earn a playoff berth. They can get it two way. One, win the second half of the season in the West or hold one of the highest win percentages when the regular season has concluded among the top four in the Division. Still 28 games to go and anything can happen.

What ranks highest with you?

After Pearl Harbor, General Theodore Roosevelt was flying on a plane and seats were hard to come by.  At a stop, priority was served on a very young sailor, but he wouldn’t get off the plane.  “I want to see my mother,” he said.

“Sorry son,” the ticket agent said, “There’s a war on, you know.”

Having heard all of this, General Roosevelt stepped up to the counter and said, “Give him my seat.  I’ll take a later plane.”

A friend of Roosevelt’s walked up, having heard him give up his seat, and said, “Teddy, nobody is going to believe this when I tell it.  Aren’t you in a hurry, too?”

And General Roosevelt said, “It’s a matter of rank.  I’m only a general.  He’s a son.”

I guess respecting someone else’s rank depends on who’s doing the ranking, doesn’t it?  Some ranks are just more important than others and not necessarily the ones we think of.  Family ranks highest.

As you make a positive life today, what ranks highest with you?

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
This time of year deer are craving salt and other minerals. The bucks need this during the time when their antlers are growing and they will literally eat the dirt if it contains traces of these raw materials. I have also seen huge holes dug deep in the ground where the deer have pawed and scratched day after day in order to reach any remnants that may be left. But it all happens within a small window of time. In fact, while they may dig for one small morsel in the spring and summer, they won’t even smell a salt block in the late fall and winter seasons.
