What ranks highest with you?

   After Pearl Harbor, General Theodore Roosevelt was flying on a plane and seats were hard to come by.  At a stop, priority was served on a very young sailor, but he wouldn’t get off the plane.  “I want to see my mother,” he said.

   “Sorry son,” the ticket agent said, “There’s a war on, you know.”

   Having heard all of this, General Roosevelt stepped up to the counter and said, “Give him my seat.  I’ll take a later plane.”

   A friend of Roosevelt’s walked up, having heard him give up his seat, and said, “Teddy, nobody is going to believe this when I tell it.  Aren’t you in a hurry, too?”

   And General Roosevelt said, “It’s a matter of rank.  I’m only a general.  He’s a son.”

   I guess respecting someone else’s rank depends on who’s doing the ranking, doesn’t it?  Some ranks are just more important than others and not necessarily the ones we think of.  Family ranks highest.

Paul J. Nanney, 85 of Union Mills, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014. 

Franklin “Everett” Wilson, age 85, of Bostic and formerly of Cliffside, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2014. 

It’s been said before by many, but almost doesn’t count.

Just as the U.S. Men’s Soccer Team looked to advance into the round of 16 in the World Cup on Sunday, it came to a crushing halt. It was a great effort following halftime when they were down 1-0 to come back and take the lead in the 80th minute at 2-1.

Do you see the obvious?  

   Someone called me recently and said that he’d read one of my books, that he’d really enjoyed it, and had started listening to his own life.

   “What’s going in your life now that you’re listening to?” I asked him.

   “Well,” he said, “just the other day I went to a new service station in town.  It’s one of those pay-at-the-pumps places.  I put my credit card in okay, but I couldn’t make the pump come on.

   “So I went inside and asked the cashier what to do.  She said for me to press the PRESS HERE button.

   “When I went back to the pump, there it was in huge letters, PRESS HERE.  I did, and the pump came on and everything was great…

   “…except I felt really dumb after missing that sign.  But then I said to myself, ‘Hey, Dr. Joey said to listen to life and make a positive life.’  So I did.

   “And I realized that’s what listening to life is all about.  Life teaches us everything we need to know and it’s so obvious, but we miss it.  That’s why listening is so important.”

The department recently was awarded an $8,000 matching grant from the state which helps small departments acquire necessary equipment. All proceeds from the BBQ will go to matching this grant money.
