Another turkey season has arrived and even though I’m excited about the possibilities, I’m reminded again of my distaste for the characteristics of this bird. Yes he’s beautiful. Yes he’s hardy. And yes he’s a wily competitor. But his best contribution is his shining example of all that I don’t want to be and all that I detest in seeing in others as well. His pride is evident and that ought to be enough to make me want to blow his head off, but there are other problems I have with him as well. One of them is his constant concern that others think of him to be something that he’s not.

What do you see?

A friend told me a story about listening to life with his grandson.  They sat together, eating M&Ms.  After a handful or so, the little guy started staring at one of the candies.

“What do you see?” the grandfather asked.

“Well, I see an M,” the boy said.  He turned the candy slowly around about a quarter of a turn.

“Now I see a 3,” he said, and turned the candy again.

“And there’s a W,” he said, turning the candy.

“And look!  There’s an E,” he told his grandfather.  “And that’s all,” he said, and popped the candy in his mouth.

Amazing, isn’t it, what you can see when you just change your perspective a little bit.  As little as a quarter turn in your viewpoint can open up a whole new world for you, can’t it?

Whatever you’re looking at in your life, turn it over and see it from an unfamiliar perspective.  Discover a whole new way to live positive!

I Can Think Of Three Reasons To Like Spring
I Can Think Of Three Reasons To Like Spring

March Madness and Martinsville, that is why I like spring. Well, I like the warmer weather too, but

Martinsville is on my mind at the moment.

The smell of brakes and the racing fuel. A whole field of cars inches apart on a half-mile track, where anything can happen. Beating up fenders and small margin for error. Yes, that is Martinsville and the first NASCAR race there of 2014 comes this Sunday.

Cane Creek Grocery The Center Of The Community!
It was built in 1939 by Uncle Wade Ensley who owned the land and sawed the timber to build the original store. The Cane Creek Grocery became “the everything store”! Do you learn from others?

John received a parrot as a gift.  This parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary.  John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by doing anything he could think of to "clean up" the bird's vocabulary.  Finally, John was fed up and yelled at the parrot.  The parrot yelled back.  So John grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer.

For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed.  Then there was total quiet.  The bird didn’t even peep for over a minute.  John got worried and quickly opened the freezer door.  The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said, "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions.  I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior."

Then the parrot said, "May I ask what the turkey did?"

Do you need to change some way you act?  Look around you and learn from others why you should change as you live positive.

It doesn’t take too many warm days in a row and one begins thinking spring. And with the recent time change, I’m all in! It’s official for me. Let the world begin again – afresh, anew, and with gobs of possibilities of which all include the outdoors.
I think the toilsome, long winter only magnified my excitement about the upcoming warm days. Stories of limits of crappie have stirred my restlessness as well. My mind is running wild. I have a substantial list of things I need to do around the house. Spring cleaning has become spring restoration. I am also eager to jump on a tractor and prepare fields and to even plow up my little garden.

Baseball

It’s no shock that East Rutherford (4-1) is finding early success on the diamond.  The only blip so far was a game in which they were outlasted by Cherryville. Most are feeling that Crest and Burns are the teams to beat in SMAC this year, but the Cavs have already picked up a statement win on the road against 9-4 to end last week.  Two big games appear sooner than later as they will host Crest on March 25 and visit R-S Central on March 27.

The annual Forest City Kiwanis pancake breakfast has been going on for 40 years or more. It is the primary fundraiser of the Kiwanis to benefit the community. This year is very special. On January 18, 2014, retired Finance Director of Forest City, Pruett Walden passed away at Duke University Medical Center. Mr. Walden was a member of the Forest City Kiwanis Club with perfect attendance for 40 years. He was past president and also Kiwanian Of The Year. This year the breakfast is named in his honor both as a Kiwanian and his service to the community.

There’s a lot of fishing going on right now. I’ve heard stories from those catching bass, crappie, and walleye. It is the perfect time of the year for fishermen, no matter what species he is after. And just like other seasons, this one will pass as quickly as it arrived. While you can catch most types of fish all year long, there are certain times that are just better. Now is one of those times. Soon the walleye will move back into the lake, the crappie will slow down, and the bass will find their lethargic summer pattern. Until then the fishing will be fast and furious.

Heartbreak for the Cavaliers in Greensboro, My All-County Team Announced

Both East Rutherford teams had a great season, but the boys and girls fell in heart breakers at regionals this week from Greensboro.

East Rutherford boys led the entire way against North Rowan, but it wouldn’t hold up.

The Cavs fell down by three with under 15 seconds to go and East had two more looks from three, but missed both as the season ended in the Elite Eight of the 2A basketball playoffs.

We miss so much in life, don’t we?

When my wife and I vacationed in Maui, we were blessed to ride around the island in a Mustang convertible.  The weather was perfect.  It rained only about fifteen minutes the whole week so we enjoyed Maui with the top down everywhere we went.

One particular trip was especially memorable.  We left early in the morning, ate breakfast on the way, and drove down the infamous “Highway to Heaven,” the road to Hana.  This road is mostly switchback turns, one-lane bridges, and picture-postcard scenery that literally takes your breath away.

Since we had the top down, we smelled the orchids blooming in a rain forest, pineapples growing out in the fields, and hundreds of acres of sugar cane being harvested.  If we had driven with the top up, we’d have missed all of those wonderful smells and scenes.

Do you drive the twists and turns of your life with the top up?  Missing all of the wonderful sights and smells sent your way?  Break out of the familiar, put the top down so you don’t miss a thing and live positive.
