Listen To Life

Phoned a friend lately?

You heard my story yesterday of how my car stalled and wouldn’t restart sitting at a traffic light on a very hot summer afternoon.  The problem was the alternator.  It quit, drained the battery, and left the car powerless.  Sort of like you and me when we try to be positive without a partner to help us.

I grabbed my phone when I realized the car just wouldn’t start.  I looked in my database for the number of my friend who has a rollback truck.  I knew he would come and get me.

I called.  One of his employees answered.  And pretty soon was on his way to pick me up.

As I listen to my life in this situation, I realize how really difficult life can be without friends, and how really wonderful life is with them.  I didn’t even think for over 1 second about who to call.  I knew immediately.  I couldn’t rescue myself.  I needed a friend.

Today, you may find yourself in need of help.  If not today, some day soon.  Who will you call?  Listen to your life and make a positive life…with your friends.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
For those of us who spend time outdoors, we get to see a lot of creatures and many of them would not exactly make it in a Field and Stream’s most beautiful animals list. I can actually remember the first time I shot a turkey and ran up to it. I was shocked by how ugly it really was. It really did have a mug that only a momma could love. And in my part of the country it’s not unusual to run into a possum scurrying about. They look like an over-grown rat that is slowly balding. The deeper south has their version that is covered with scales, called an armadillo. Or like we like to call them, moving speed bumps.

East Rutherford Falls In Wild Contest, TJCA Stops Rosman This Time
East Rutherford Falls In Wild Contest, TJCA Stops Rosman This Time

Where do I start? R-S Central felt heartbreak in week one and East Rutherford met the same fate in week two of high school football.

So, Austin Hollifield throws a beautiful 54-yard pass to a wide open Will Hollifield with three minutes left to go, pushing East Rutherford’s lead to 42-28 at North Gaston last week. Everybody in the stadium thought it was over, but as ESPN’s Lee Corso would say…“Not so fast my friend.”

Got the power?

My wife and I had just enjoyed a leisurely lunch together, just the two of us, which was nice and unusual.  I pulled away from the restaurant and stopped at a traffic light.  It was very hot afternoon so the air conditioning felt really nice, until…the car cut off.  And wouldn’t restart.  Despite my best efforts.

Now I’m not a mechanic, but I listened to the car as I tried to restart it and decided it must be the alternator.  And, believe it or not, my mechanic later told me I was right.  The alternator produces the electricity for the car, using the battery as a source.  When the alternator stops producing, the battery is left to charge the car on its own.  It can do that for a while, but then it’s drained completely, leaving the car powerless.

I can relate with that battery, can’t you?  I can produce some power to make a positive life for a while, but without help, I find myself drained and powerless.  I need someone to be my alternator, to produce some positive power with me.  There is real power in conceiving the positive with a partner.  So look for your partner today as you make a positive life.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
So many times when we think of our outdoor activities we envision an event with a friend or family member. What I was reminded of recently was that for some, the outdoors involves the whole family. Many families love to spend time in a campground or at the lake. Lake houses, houseboats, and campers are a sign that families can play together.  I’ve never seen a child who complains about playing in the water for hours on end. I really can’t think of anything that is not positive about putting a lifejacket on a child and letting him or her explore all of the things the lakes have to offer. It’s good for them physically, mentally, and socially, and it even keeps them from becoming Saturday morning couch potatoes and video game junkies.
