Do you understand?

Has anybody cut you off in traffic lately?  You know, pulled in front of you and made you hit the brakes to avoid an accident?  If it hasn’t happened lately, odds are it will if you drive much.

Now when it happened in the past, what did you do?  How did you react?

I guess it’s natural for you to yell at the driver, as if he could hear you, right?  Or, to blow your horn, more than once maybe, and flash your lights.

But did you stop and wonder, “Why did she do that?”

Maybe she was distracted by something stressful in her life like she can’t pay her mortgage because she was laid off by her company.  Or, she’s going home from the doctor’s office after being diagnosed with breast cancer.  Or, maybe his wife left him and his best friend, too…and together.  Or, maybe he had a shouting match with his teenaged son that morning.

Now I know that person should drive more carefully, but try to understand what might be happening with that person rather than just expressing your displeasure.  The same way you want someone to understand you.

   In 1996, a new pastor from Georgia, Scotty Poole of the Little White Country Church in Gilkey, felt the needy of Rutherford County should be helped. 

     “For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you took me in.” (Matthew 25:35).

     Pastor Poole’s mother-in-law in Georgia was directing a food ministry. A road trip was in order for members of the Little White Church to learn from her and do the same. In January 1997 the church began “The Neighbors Pantry”. 

Chase was the only undefeated football team in Rutherford County last week, but a very powerful Burns team brought the two-game win streak to an abrupt halt.

Burns, the bigger, more explosive team, along with a pretty impressive defense beat Chase 48-9 last week. Chase (2-1, 0-1) was held to two first downs last week, one each half, and never got any sort of a rhythm offensively.

   In keeping with the outstanding spirit of the school, volunteer graduates have put together a 50 year all class celebration for East Rutherford High School. It all happens on Saturday, September 21 from 1 p.m to 10 p.m.  

   If you have been a part of East Rutherford High School, staff, student or fan, you are welcome to this big celebration. There is a crowd of 2500 to 3000 expected to participate in the event. East Rutherford High School students and graduates from all over the country will be coming to downtown Forest City at Florence Mill Park on Mill Street. It’s all free! The event also includes all Cool Springs High graduates.

This coming Friday, conference play begins for the South Mountain Athletic football teams, but first up is Gryphons football.

Unfortunately, Thomas Jefferson doesn’t play as well as they are capable of doing and end up falling for the first time all year in a 34-13 loss in the home opener to Avery (2-1). 

Avery won the field position battle all night with great punts by Tre Jackson and forced Thomas Jefferson to go the length of the field on offense. The Gryphons were down at the end of the third, 27-13, but cut it to 20-13 on Coty Flynn’s run to pay dirt. However, a big run led to one touchdown and another short field in back-to-back possessions allowed the Vikings to pull away.
