Are you being recycled?

A friend of mine started a business that recycled wood.  That is, he would buy old barns, beams and rafters out of old textile mills, and old wood out of other buildings, and craft it into lots of wonderful, one-of-a-kind products.  For instance, wood flooring and paneling, and he even made furniture out of this old wood.

Now you and I drive right by some of these places where he got his wood.  Old barns out in the country, barns that are falling down.  Dilapidated factories that companies abandoned long ago.  Sure, they were handsome in their day, but now they’re just old.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
I have yet to engage in some serious river fishing this spring. I have been especially busy and it will be at least 2 more weeks until I can jump in my little boat and float down the river. That doesn’t mean that my outdoor activities have stopped; only the ones that involve fish and game. My garden still needs tending and thankfully I am able to do a little cycling with some friends and see some new scenery.

A Celebration Of Survival!
A Celebration Of Survival!

Two years ago, the Forest City Owls began a special “pink out” ball game salute for cancer at McNair Field. The color pink dominated the game. It was another example of the Owls continuing commitment to be involved in the community.

On Saturday, June 15, McNair Field was decorated in pink in honor of breast cancer and everything was about saluting cancer survivors and raising money for a cure. A silent auction at the ballpark produced funds that went directly to the Rutherford County Cancer Society.

Just eleven races are left before the Nextel Cup Playoffs as called “The Chase”. So, this week, here is my look on the top 15 and notables. Note: The top ten spots go to highest in points and the final two are wildcards by way of wins and in the top 20 of points to make up the 12 team field.

Are you in a rut?

Do you drive the same way home every day when you get off of work?

So what would happen if you drove a different way home from work today?  You’d see something new, potentially exciting and your mind would disengage from work more efficiently.

Do you eat in the same restaurant really often and find yourself ordering the same thing just about every time?

What would happen if you ate in a different restaurant on a different night of the week?  Or, ate at the same restaurant, but ordered something you’d never eaten there before?  You’d see new people, and experience new tastes.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
Perhaps the greatest reason for most of our failures is simple neglect. In the outdoor world it may be that we neglected to check to see if our scope was accurate before we went on our hunt. Or it may be that if we had not neglected to retie our spinner bait, that bass would not have broken the line. Neglect comes in many forms when it comes to hunting and fishing.

White an Astro, Arizona Diamondbacks Win Big in MLB Draft
White an Astro, Arizona Diamondbacks Win Big in MLB Draft

Last week, Tyler White was hoping to get a shot at the big leagues following his four-year effort of school and baseball career at Western Carolina University.

The former Chase High baseball standout received that nod as he became a part of the Houston Astros in the 33rd round of the Major League Baseball Draft over the weekend. While helping Western Carolina pick up the So-Con regular season title this season and becoming a Louisville Slugger All-American, being drafted by a major league team just made 2013 even sweeter for the Rutherford County native.
