Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
This was one of those mornings where it seemed the deer were everywhere. As soon as the dimmest light shone over the mountains, I had already located a small yearling doe feeding in the acorns beside my stand. Just a few minutes later 2 older doe were filtering across the hill just out of range of my bow. By now my expectations for the day were on high alert. I couldn’t have been more right. For nearly 3 hours I watched deer come and go without ever giving my location away. It was fun…….. except for the moment in the middle of this morning when I shot over the back of a deer. Missed her completely. In fact, she would have had to have been about 18 inches taller for me just to nick her back. It was that bad.

Listen To Life

When dandelions dot my lawn, I reach for the weed and feed to kill them.  But then I remember my daughters picking the little yellow flowers to give to their mother and blowing the downy seeds to make a wish.

When I’m walking around our farm and the wind starts whipping down the mountain, I steel myself against it, sometimes reach up for what’s left of my hair, and grouse if I’m walking up hill about how I wish the wind was blowing in a different direction.

How to Recycle in Rutherford County
How to Recycle in Rutherford County

With curbside pick-up in most of our towns and 10 Convenience Centers scattered outside of city limits, it is easy for all of Rutherford County’s residents to recycle. Sometimes, we just need a little know-how.

If you live in the city. The towns of Ellenboro, Forest City, Ruth and Rutherfordton all have curbside pickup. Businesses and residents are provided a recycling bin that can hold paper, glass bottles and jars, plastic, and aluminum - there is no need to sort your recycling.

Do you G.I.G.O.?

Technology-related professionals talk about an acronym, G.I.G.O. or GIGO.  It means, “Garbage In, Garbage Out.”  They’re referring to the fact that whatever you put in a computer is what you get out of a computer.

Your mind is like a computer.  One way of thinking about the garbage you feed your mind is to evaluate the level of negativity that you expose yourself to.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
It is known that one of the catalysts that bring on the deer rut is the shortening of daylight hours. And even though it makes for great deer hunting, it hinders just about every other part of my living. I mean I don’t know of many people who prefer 8 or 9 hours of daylight and 15 or 16 hours of darkness. I know that different parts of the country (and world) have different scenarios but this is how many of us live during the winter.
