15th annual... kids & cops
15th annual... kids & cops
The fifteenth annual kids & cops big event takes place on Friday, June 22nd from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. It just gets bigger and better every year. The Forest City Police started the event with just crayons and colorbook pages downtown in Forest City years ago. Now it has grown to one of the biggest events in Western Carolina. It is held at Forest City Dunbar Park. You are invited to join thousands who will come out to let the world know that cops are our friends. They help us, watch over us and are always there for us! It’s that one day of every year that we all get together to celebrate “our friends” - the cops who take this time to salute the kids!

How do you talk to your child?

Can you imagine the mother of Christopher Columbus saying, “I don’t care what you’ve discovered, you still could have written!”?

Or, George Washington’s mother saying, “The next time I catch you throwing money across the Potomac, you can kiss your allowance good-bye!”?

Or, Thomas Edison’s mother saying, “Of course I’m proud you invented the electric light bulb.  Now turn it off and go to sleep!”?

Wells, Jenkins & Wells Opens Retail... Another Step Forward!
Wells, Jenkins & Wells Opens Retail... Another Step Forward!

From the beginning, it has always been about family. Three families. The need to feed the family and provide a service to the community was the motivating drive that emerged as Wells, Jenkins & Wells. It all started 35 years ago.

For themselves and for their neighbors, Grady Wells and his brother Billy did what they needed to do to “keep food on the table”. Together with a good friend, Earl Jenkins, who lived next door, they responded to the constant demand for butcher services. All three were very good at butchering. The only problem was that they did not have a plant. They began butchering in Earl’s basement. However, on April 15, 1970 they got caught.

Outdoor Truths

The older I get, the more I enjoy the small rivers around my area. I used to be the lake type. I used to look forward to the sport, and even competition, of fishing. That competition was not necessarily with other boats, but it was as much with me. It seemed that each time I went fishing the score was zero to zero and each fish I caught or didn’t catch moved the score in one direction or another. I loved it, but it seems now that I didn’t appreciate it as much as I should have. Don’t get me wrong, my most memorable trips are still the ones where I caught the most fish; except perhaps for those where thunder and lightening were involved. But for the most part the lake has provided some great memories. And I hope it has more to give.

Major League Prospect No More, Arrowood Drafted

Ryan Arrowood went undefeated during his senior year on the mound as an Appalachian State Mountaineer, but 2012 become became much sweeter the former R-S Central grad.

On the second day of the Major League draft and in the 28th round, Arrowood was selected by the Colorado Rockies last week. Arrowood, who also played summer ball with the Owls in two seasons, both CPL titles, signed a professional contract on Sunday.

Coming Together To Fight Cystic Fibrosis
Coming Together To Fight Cystic Fibrosis

It was a first for Rutherford County. There has never been a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis. However, two Rutherford County heros brought the need to help to the forefront. Their names are Landon Pruett and Anderson Pritchard. Both are two years old. Both were diagnosed just shortly after birth. They need constant attention and therapy. They also are very special and very loved. This event was held Sat., May 26 at Isothermal Community College.

What is Cystic Fibrosis? Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects the respiratory and digestive system. People with Cystic Fibrosis inherit a defective gene on chromosome 7 called CFTR.

How do you like your tea?

Did you know that here in the U.S. June is National Iced Tea Month?

Now for those who grew up in the southern U.S., I suspect every month is National Iced Tea Month.  Most likely you were weaned on iced tea and probably sugar-sweetened iced tea.  You drink sweet iced tea with at least two meals a day and maybe even for breakfast, too.  For you, iced tea is…well, normal. But go to another part of the world, like the Orient, and iced tea isn’t normal.  When you ask for tea, it’s not iced, but hot.  It may not be black tea, but green tea.  And you drink it from a tiny cup, not a 20 ounce tumbler filled with ice cubes.

What the hickory chicken is to spring, the catalpa worm is to summer. You just don’t eat em’. The catalpa worm is another special surprise that shows up in June or July. This particular worm is a delicacy for bluegill and catfish. To be more specific, the catalpa caterpillar is actually the larval stage of the catalpa sphinx moth. These moths exclusively infest catalpa trees.  I’m sure there is a more scientific name for these caterpillars, but to a bluegill or catfish fisherman, they are superbait. A catalpa tree is a tree that has big broad leaves and pods of beans that are about a foot long. (We used to call them “cigar” trees) This worm loves to devour their leaves until there’s nothing left.
