The Rutherford County Sports Hall of Fame (RCSHOF) is excited to announce that registration is now open for the T. Max Champion Memorial Golf Tournament presented by Hardin's Drugs. The Tournament will take place Friday, August 6 at Cleghorn Golf & Sports Club in Rutherfordton.

The Tournament will consist of three person teams with a registration fee of $75 per player. Proceeds will benefit the RCSHOF Scholarship Fund. A $600 grand prize will be awarded to the winning team. Lunch will be served at 12 p.m. and the first ball is set to be in the air at 1 p.m.

CRM Insurance of Spindale will serve as the Golf Sponsor in 2021, while Forest City Honda and Ulysses Miller Funeral Services of Rutherfordton will serve as Scholarship Sponsors.

"The RCSHOF is excited to be back up and running again in 2021 and to get things started with our annual golf tournament," RCSHOF Co-chairman Rodney Greene said.

2021 will mark the fourth year of the annual RCSHOF golf tournament. This year it will bear the name of Rutherford County coaching legend and RCSHOF founding board member Max Champion, who passed away earlier this year. Champion embodied the values of "Small Town Friendly" both on and off the field during his nearly 35 year coaching career. He coached at East Rutherford, Chase and R-S Central, and continued to be involved in Rutherford County athletics by joining the RCSHOF Board in 2017.

"Coach Champion was a very compassionate yet competitive coach in this community for many years," Greene said. "He raised the bar for athletes in Rutherford County as a coach and as board member. He is sorely missed in this community."

In addition, the RCSHOF announces David Smith has joined the Board of Directors, along with some minor changes to the induction ceremony.

"It's a great honor and privilege to serve," Smith said. "Rutherford County is home to many great athletes, both past and present, and this is a wonderful organization that recognizes their achievements in their sport and the community."

The induction of the next RCSHOF class will now take place in the Spring of 2022 instead of Fall 2021. Co-chairman Jody Wright is excited by the prospect of a spring induction.

"We had a lot of momentum with some really strong classes and we are looking forward to that continuing in the Spring of 2022," he said.
