Four Rutherford County residents returned home recently after volunteering in Lake Charles, Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura.

Tom and Karen Hamrick and Eddy and Doris Jones, all members of Florence Baptist Church in Forest City, worked with the NC Baptist Disaster Relief Team, serving on the sanitation team, said Tom Hamrick.

The four have participated in numerous mission projects in North Carolina and across the country and were willing and ready to drive the 16 hours to Lake Lure to help hurricane victims.

Tom Hamrick said going to Lake Charles was similar to other hurricane ravaged areas where he and Karen have worked in the past.

"But so much of this town was destroyed," Tom said. For a long time the town was without electricity.

The team from Forest City worked with others at the feeding sites sponsored by the NC Baptist on Missions, washing and scrubbing pans throughout the day.

Hamrick said they are back home now until another call depending on the next hurricane.

"And they are out there," said Tom.
