For those who want an early taste of high school football, the Rutherford County Football Jamboree is set for this Friday at Chase High.

Junior varsity takes to the field starting at 5:30 p.m. and varsity follows suit.

East Rutherford will go against North Henderson to open up things with varsity going around 6:10 p.m. R-S Central faces Hunter Huss at 7p.m., while the varsity appears at 7:40 p.m. Finally, Chase takes on North Buncombe at 8:20 with varsity going around 9 p.m.

While summer isn’t completely over neither is play on the diamond for one Forest City team.

After winning the state little league tourney, Forest City’s junior league softball team was defeated in three games they played in the South regional. They fell 10-0 to Tennessee, 10-1 to Georgia and 5-3 to Cape Coral, Florida in Fort Myers, Florida.

Meanwhile, the Forest City Owls are in the semifinals for the third year in a row. If they can beat the Gastonia Grizzlies this week in two of three games, Forest City will vie for a third straight Coastal Plain League title.

The Owls would be the second club to do so in league history as Thomasville is the only other team to accomplished the feat. Early indications look good, Forest City took game one, 5-0 on Monday.

By the way, there is a new catchphrase in NASCAR--break an ankle!”

On the track, Brad Keselowski is 1-for-1 with a broken left ankle. Keselowski had a terrible crash last week at Road America in preparation for this weekend’s road course event at Watkins Glen.

Keselowski, who still competed at Pocono on Sunday, fended off Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch to capture the checkered flag for his second win of the season.

And what a bizarre season as Keselowski now becomes on “The Chase” bubble, while Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards have posted just one win each so far in 21 races. Johnson and Edwards are fairly locked into the Chase field, but Hamlin (11th) is the most vulnerable at the moment.

Hamlin has the first bubble spot of two and another win should get him into postseason.

With five races to go, Dale Earnhardt Jr. isn’t in the clear either by sitting 10th in points at the moment. Four of the next five are good tracks for Junior and a win would go a long way into cementing his chances into “The Chase.”
