Hardin's Drug "It's All About The People"

Born and raised in Forest City, brothers Ken and Marshall Hardin have made their mark on our local history. Even as children the brothers were 'wired to work'. They learned early on that hard work and diligence paid off, so it wasn't a surprise that back in the early 1970's they put together a plan that resulted in the now well-known and successful Hardin's Drug. "We started with nothing other than each other." said Ken Hardin.

"All The Shingle Ladies" The Women Roofers

By now, most everyone in the county has heard about The Women Roofers -- those exceptional women that have gained notoriety for providing urgently needed repairs to the homes of qualified homeowners in the county. They help with a lot of projects, but mostly, they replace leaky roofs. They've been doing it for 15 years and they've received a good bit of publicity for their good work. They're kind of 'famous' around here.

Legion baseball

Post 423 has started out 6-0 on the year and have a pretty strong cast of players on the roster this season. A year ago, they were a force to reckon with, but now that the majority of the team is back, they could be a tougher out this season. However, they are now on graduation break and will not return to the field until June 20th when they face Cherryville at home.

Isothermal Partners With NC State For 4th Annual Engineering Discovery Camp

"The Engineering Discovery Camp, a partnership between Isothermal Community College and North Carolina State University, engages campers in the engineering design process (EDP) through team-based hands-on activities. Rather than simply following directions like you would when assembling a model airplane, the campers are challenged with a specific problem to solve but the solution remains open ended." says Dale Gaddis, Camp Director.

The ACC may not be that strong in baseball

NCAA Baseball

It appears the only team in the ACC left in the running for the National title is North Carolina, unless Duke somehow made it past Georgia on Monday.

Clemson, N.C. State and Florida State were all upset at home, while Louisville fell at Texas Tech. The Tarheels will now face Stetson and they remind me of Coastal Carolina from a couple of years ago. Stetson's pitching is not bad, but they can certainly hit the baseball and play defense. The only difference is that Coastal Carolina had way better pitching and they were clutch when they needed to be.

R-S Central baseball has won eight playoff games in the last calendar year after defeating West Iredell in round one and Anson 4-1 in the second round.

Central played a very tough Ledford team on Tuesday and if they advance will likely play North Davidson at home Friday at 7pm.

East Rutherford's season came to an end as Franklin beat them on the road 4-3. It was an up and down season all year as they won 14 games, but lost by errors in round one. That isn't typical Cavalier baseball. Still, East Rutherford is a threat ever time they step on the field.

Local News Show Produced By Isothermal Students

Right here, in the heart of the county, local news is being produced weekly by the students of Isothermal Community College's Broadcast and Production Technology program. "Every semester, a new group of broadcasting students get to learn the reality of television show production. It takes a lot of people and a lot of time working as a team to produce just a few minutes of television." said Carolyn Young, Video Broadcasting Instructor. "And, what better way to learn than to actually create a weekly show."

High School Playoffs

R-S Central softball (18-4, 13-2) and baseball (21-3, 14-1) should be at home for quite a while should they keep winning. Both opened at home Wednesday and will stay at home Saturday if they advanced. There is a chance that Central softball could only get one round at home though depending on how the bracket falls.

The Fountain at Smith's Drugs
The Fountain at Smith's Drugs "We remember that it is our privilege to serve our community"

The Rutherford Weekly recently approached Smith's Drug Store with the intention of producing an article about the long life of The Fountain and it's 'secret for success' all these years. Mr. John Higgins, owner and pharmacist, referred us to Mrs. Susan Stewart who is the current manager of The Fountain. We presented Mrs. Stewart with a list of questions and her response was so thorough and compelling that we are publishing it verbatim. Her description of The Fountain and it's history illustrates the culture that, one would conclude, answers any questions about it's longevity.
