Brandon Gosey, member of the Rutherford County Board of Education, has organized a community wide forum called, "Keeping Schools Safe." Designed to give the community an opportunity to have their voices heard on this serious topic, Gosey tells us, "I am excited about organizing this much needed discussion between our community, our members, elected officials and services providers."

Since it's early March, spring sports have arrived. Now that basketball is over, it's now onto High School baseball. Don't get me wrong, I am looking forward to college basketball's March Madness and we can talk about that next week.

"Rev. Lynda Ferguson was the pastor of Salem United Methodist Church in 2009 when this project was born. Lynda wanted to create a place where Jesus' picture of the kingdom of God, as described in Matthew 25, could come to life. She rallied the support of the community and congregation in this endeavor, and created a space that would provide food and clothing to those in the eastern part of Rutherford County." says current pastor, Reverend Sam Burleson.

It took just one week of postseason for High School basketball to end in Rutherford County.

According to the US Census Bureau, over 15% of the nation's total population exceeds 65 years of age. Here in Rutherford County, that number is closer to 21%. In a report USCB published in 2012, it was determined that over 35% of individuals that live alone in the US were 65 and older. That number is expected to increase significantly until 2030 with the 'baby boomers' generation. Health issues like Alzheimer's, Dementia, Diabetes, Heart Disease and Cancer are commonly associated with aging and will be putting our seniors at higher risk, making those living alone more and more vulnerable as the years go by.

High School Basketball

It had been 17 years since R-S Central won a conference hoops tournament, but last Friday they took home the Men's crown in the 2018 Southwestern 2A Conference with a 73-59 victory over East Rutherford.

"It's been a lot of hard work by a group of volunteers to make this happen and to get an 18 game schedule in our first year, as well as getting into a state association, has been challenging, yet rewarding." said Ryan Elkins, volunteer coach, on the inaugural basketball season. "These aren't top notch basketball players or athletes but they are great kids learning to play the game of basketball while also learning life lessons like teamwork, focus, dedication and perseverance. We are planning on having a girl's softball team this year and next year we plan to add girl's volleyball, boy's soccer, cross country and golf. It's an exciting time at TMA!"

High School Hoops

After falling to East Gaston for the second time this season, R-S Central Men found themselves as the co-champs of the Southwestern 2A Conference with South Point. It's the first league title in 17 years when they shared it with East Rutherford in 2001. No question, it's the best Central team since that 2001 season.

"During our many years together we have said countless goodbyes to one another. Every working day we would wish each other a good day, followed with a kiss, before we each went our separate way. Over time, you had many business trips, some were overnight and others as long as two weeks in length, but, as we said goodbye, we knew we parted in love, secure in the knowledge that we would always be reunited after a short time apart. Our love for one another sustained us and we knew those goodbyes were temporary. We would see one another again and be one in mind and heart.

Now, however, you are taking a very long journey, one where I cannot accompany you. You are taking a trip accompanied by the disease of Alzheimer's. Neither of us know how long this trip will last or the exact time frame we are working within."

Men's High School Basketball

R-S Central (16-6, 6-2) has two games left in the regular season as they play East Gaston and Chase. Should Central win twice, they are the Southwestern 2A Conference Champs and make the playoffs as they likely 1 seed in conference. They own the tiebreaker over Shelby as they have beat the Golden Lions twice this season.

Chase Corner Community Ministries was established in 1979 by a cooperative effort of six United Methodist Churches working together to address community needs at that time. Several of the local mills had shut down and many families were in need of a helping hand.

R-S Central at East Rutherford (Men)

R-S Central hit nine more free throws, Arnie Twitty played a huge factor for 17 points and East Rutherford rarely got more than one shot down the floor. Those are the reasons why R-S Central (15-5, 5-1) grabbed the regular season sweep.

For more than 33 years, Granny's Bakery, now named Granny B's, has been serving up delicious cakes, pastries and sub sandwiches in Spindale. "We named it Granny's before I was a grandmother." said Aleta 'Granny' Nichols.

The first time these cross county rivals met nearly a month ago, both were close games until East Rutherford Ladies pulled away by 12 and so did the R-S Central guys.

We've all seen them there at the intersection. Brooms in one hand and candy in the other. They stand out there all day, hour after hour, weaving themselves through the cars, collecting donations while handing out candy to everyone. They are the tip of the iceberg, a small representation of an enormous body of generous souls that do the same all across the planet. They are the Lions.

R-S Central has now moved to 12-4, 2-0 and continue to show senior leadership, poise and depth in what is a very tough league in hoops play. Elijah Carson was a big factor this past week off the bench and Zyrion Wilkins continues to lead the Hilltoppers. They continue to play a little better defensively every game too. Central has a big game against East Gaston at home, Friday, the 19th.

East Rutherford (11-6, 1-2) has struggled in conference play, but have lost both league games by less than 10 points. Josh Searcy and Quay Logan have been doing their part.

So, let's just start at the beginning. Every good story starts there, right?
