Spring Playoffs Arrive!

Last week’s rematch wasn’t much of a rematch at all between East Rutherford and Chase on the baseball diamond. East Rutherford exacted revenge by whipping the Trojans 25-1 at Chase last week.
With that being the case, East Rutherford looks ever-so dangerous again as they should open the 2A playoffs at home against South Iredell, Friday.
For the first time in school history, Thomas Jefferson makes the 1A baseball playoffs. However, they will do it in grand style by hosting a wildcard team at McNair Field on Friday.
Over at R-S Central, they too will host a first round 3A playoff game on Friday as Crest comes to town.
While all four schools in the county make the baseball playoffs, Chase will be the only one on the road. They have to go all the way to Sylva to try and knock off Smoky Mountain on Friday.
In softball, Chase has the No.1 seed from the SMAC and will likely play East Burke, but with the CVAC tournament going on right now, Draughn is still a possibility on Tuesday, the 17th.
While East Rutherford is a No.2 seed, they will have to travel to either Smoky Mountain or North Henderson on the 17th. The Lady Cavs won two rounds as a lower seed on the road a year ago.
For the first time in few years, R-S Central will hit the road in the softball playoffs as a No.3 seed and face Fred T. Foard on the 17th.
In girls soccer, Thomas Jefferson got in as a wildcard and could play Saturday at home in the second round if they win in the first round and Union beats Cherryville on the road, Wednesday. R-S Central grabbed a No.3 seed and played a very tough St. Stephens on the road to open the 3A playoffs, Wednesday.
For those who didn’t see, trouble brewed in Darlington…in a good and a bad way.
NASCAR can say what it wants, but the Kevin Harvick-Kyle Busch skirmish is good for the sport. Unfortunately, when two of the biggest hot heads in auto racing get angry, they do things that may impact others. Last Saturday night was a great example.
There was a lot that happened in the final laps between the two, but Harvick stopped his car in front of Busch on pit road to insinuate a post-race confrontation. That situation is common practice with an angry driver behind the wheel.
Although, Busch has room to go around the 29, he instead waits for Harvick to get out of the car and throw a punch. Busch then pushes the 29 machine with NOBODY in the car!
Sure, Busch knew that he was going to damage Harvick’s car with the push, but people are at risk. Officials and crew members were running down that way to stop the matter. Luckily there were no injuries as Harvick’s car rolled down pit road a very short distance and took a hard left into the pit wall.
I am not blaming Kyle Busch for the whole thing, both are at fault. In a sense, that’s the Rowdy many of us really want to see, because people love to dislike him. So, marriage hasn’t completely changed Busch as everybody claims.
It’s also been a weird start to the NASCAR season. Trevor Bayne (Daytona 500) and Regan Smith (Southern 500) both pick up their first wins in historic races. What’s next?
And for those who don’t know, two names around the area stepped down as high school coaches this past week. The biggest name comes from Shelby in a man that goes by Chris Norman. Norman, who coached the Golden Lions football team to three state titles over the last 13 years will not be leading the Lions this fall.
Up at McDowell High, Lloyd Church will leave the men’s basketball program. Church has been there 22 years and built up quite a basketball reputation in Marion.
Although, there is that border county rivalry of sorts with both, I have always thought a lot of Norman and Church. I wish them well in their future endeavors.
