A young team who yearns for a confidence booster. That’s exactly the Rutherford County Post 423 Senior Legion team in a nutshell this season. The bad part is that they need to get going to make a postseason spot.

Post 423 (4-6) goes 1-3 this past week and have six games left in the regular season. Right now, they sit eighth out of nine teams, but within three games of being in fourth.

This past week, Post 423 beat Asheville 5-3, then lost a four-run lead to Caldwell in the ninth. They also lost 12-4 to Cherryville after leading 4-1 in the first frame. Despite going 4-for-6, Dylan Parris led the way in the loss to Cherryville. They were shutout by Shelby, who leads the Western Division.

In the Majors, the hottest team in baseball right now…the Toronto Blue Jays?  Well, they have won 11 in a row. Juan Encarnacion, Adam Lind, Jose Bautista, J.C. Arencibia and Colby Rasmus have proven they can provide the offense. R.A. Dickey, Mark Behrle, Esmil Rogers and Josh Johnson have shown that they can hold up opponents while on the mound. The Blue Jays went from 10-21 to now within a scary hot five games of the American League East lead. It arguably could be the best division in the MLB as all five A.L. East teams are now within five games of each other.

Meanwhile, the Braves still have a 5.5 game lead in the National League East, but have went 4-6 in their last 10 games. However, there is a little concern of a slump since they are last in runs per game and scoring with runners in scoring position this month.

On the NASCAR scene, Martin Truex Jr. snapped a 218-race winless streak and deservedly so. As a member of Michael Waltrip Racing, Truex has finished second or third in six of the last two full seasons of races and been a factor in number of events until bad breaks took him of the picture. I knew it was coming, but I didn’t know when. This weekend at Kentucky gives him a good shot for two in a row, finishing second and eighth the last two years.

Truex also helped himself out by jumping all the way to tenth in the standings, thus pushing into The Chase for now. Jeff Gordon finished second last week and gained seven points and three spots in Sonoma. He is just 12 points behind tenth and in thirteenth now. Just a win this weekend, it would jump him into a wildcard spot with nine races to go.

Interesting to mention, Denny Hamlin needs to win twice (in my opinion) and gain 83 points on the five teams in front of him to get back to 20th in the standings and in Chase contention. He sits 25th with 10 races left before the Chase to the Championship.

As for the NBA, the Miami Heat went back-to-back, now winning the 2013 title. However, I felt like the San Antonio Spurs played the best throughout the whole playoffs and even in that championship series. Still, Miami hung around in pivotal games six and seven and came through when they had too. If Lebron James and the Heat are playing anybody down by just five points with a three minutes to go, don’t bet against the Heat and they showed just that throughout the 2013 playoffs.

Finally, the Forest City Owls (9-13) are playing a bit better. They stopped a 10-game losing streak and have now won seven of their last ten games. The Owls sit just 3.5 games shy of breaking into the top four of the CPL West Division, which is the last remaining playoff spot. At press time, 34 games remained, which gives them plenty of time to make a run, but probably won’t get it done in the first half of the season. Just six games remain before the first half concludes.
