Things sure have formed quickly for the former Chase High School graduate as Tyler White became a Houston Astro. He was assigned to Orlando, Florida for Major League rookie ball and is now starting at third base for that rookie ball team. Wait, it gets even better!

Since joining the club for the last seven games, White currently is batting .429 on average, has 12 hits in 28 at-bats, with two doubles, a homer and eight RBI. While there will be some ups and down, it’s a great start for White in Florida.

Closer to home, the legion playoffs will have Post 423 Rutherford County in them. They won their last three games 18-0 over Haywood County, 13-3 over Burke and then beat Cherryville 8-2.

In the game against Burke, Joel McDaniel was 4-for-4 with 4 RBI, Dylan Parris was 2-for-4 with 3RBI, Will Odom went 2-for-4 and Colton Snethen had two hits and a RBI. Brock Helton went the distance on the mound, giving up just three hits and striking out four. Helton also had two hits and three RBI.

Now Post 423 as the Western Division Area IV seven seed is set to meet the Eastern Division Area IV No.2 seed Gaston Braves this week in a five game series. Game one was played on the road Wednesday, game two is at R-S Central on Thursday. They will play game three on the road Friday, game four at R-S Central if needed on Saturday and back Gastonia if game five is needed on Sunday.

Continuing the summer trek of Rutherford County baseball, the Forest City Owls have a weird trend going on this season and that’s not a good thing. Forest City had won 8 of their last 11 games and then ended last week on a four game backslide. Forest City remains 2.5 games behind for the fourth and final playoff spot with 29 games left. And remember, the Owls have never failed to make the CPL postseason in its first five years of joining the league.

Congrats to a couple little league teams as well. Rutherfordton won the 6-7-8 District One baseball title and will head to Wilson in mid-July for the state championship. Forest City also made it as the runner-up since District One gets two teams in this season. Rutherfordton also won the 9-10 softball district one championship and will play in the state tourney in Pilot Mountain on July 13th.

On the NASCAR circuit, I say count Denny Hamlin out of contention for the Chase to the Championship. Hamlin has made every Chase in his career until this season. After smacking the wall in Kentucky, Hamlin sits 104 points out of 20th in the points and has no wins so far this season. Now he has to win likely three times in the next nine races aside from gaining 10 more points a race to even have a shot of making the postseason. I just don’t see it happening after losing 21 points in one weekend.

Defending Cup champ cursed? Brad Keselowski sits just on the outside of contention, falling four spots with a wreck at Kentucky, but going 17 events this season without a victory is definitely a shock to me.

Fun fact: if the Chase started today, four drivers would make it without a win this season.

Finally, Charlotte drafted with the fourth overall pick and took Cody Zeller from the University of Indiana. Many experts nor fans like the pick. Zeller was a great college basketball player, but Charlotte needs somebody they can build around. I am still unsure about the pick myself.
